Ethelyn
Edwards was born June 3, 1920 in Haxtun to Warren D.C. Wood and Ella
Sears Wood Bjorklun. She passed away January 26, 1998 at Haxtun Hospital
at the age of 77.
Ethelyn attended Haxtun schools and graduated
in 1939. Toward the end of World War II, she was employed as a telephone
operator. She married Charles F. Edwards on June 26, 1945, at the home
of her parents in Haxtun. To this union were born two sons, Chase in
1946 and Warren in 1950. The Edwards family took in several foster
children.
Ethelyn was an active lifetime member of the Haxtun
Church of the Brethren and served the church community in various ways.
She enjoyed dancing and helping others. She belonged to the American
Legion, VFW, DAV and Hospital Auxiliaries; American War Mothers, AARP, 8
& 40, 6-14 Club and the Red Cross. Ethelyn will be remembered by many as
Den Mother of Scouting and Boys Club for 20 years. She was instrumental
in lowering the legal voting age to 18 and could be seen daily with her
husband raising and lowering the flags at the Haxtun Cemetery.
Ethelyn was preceded in death by her parents Ella and Warren Wood; her
step-father August Bjorklun, Sr. She
is survived by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Edwards; sons, Chase Edwards
of Tucson, Arizona and Warren and wife, June Edwards, of Haxtun;
grandchildren Jesse and wife, Jenny, and Damon and wife, Shawnda, all of
Haxtun, Cindy Edwards of Arvada and great grandchildren Nichole Edwards
and Brady Edwards.
Services were held on January 30, at the
Church of the Brethren in Haxtun. Rev. Roy Pfaltzgraff officiated.
