Haxtun Harvest, Haxtun, Colorado, August 18, 1948
Ellsworth
E. DONALDSON, RESIDENT 30 YEARS, BURIED SUNDAY
E.E. Donaldson,
85, prominent resident for more than 30 years answered the final call of
his Master Thursday afternoon, “August 12, at the Good Samaritan
Hospital in Sterling, following an extended illness of many months.
“Dad” Donaldson came to Haxtun in 1917 from Denver, and with his son,
Earl, established a hardware and furniture store which they operated for
20 years. He took an active interest in all church and civic affairs of
this little town and became one of Haxtun’s best loved citizens. All who
knew him loved him for his kindly manner and his cheerful disposition.
He served as member of the Town Board of Trustees for several terms
and in that capacity was instrumental in furthering many projects of
community betterment. In 1936, Mr. Donaldson and his son, now deceased,
moved the Donaldson hardware store to Sterling where they were in
business for two years. They sold the business there and moved to
California.
A short time later, Mr. Donaldson came back to
Colorado and then went to Ohio, his home state, for a few months. He
returned to Haxtun in 1940 and was appointed by the Town Board of
Trustees to take care of the Haxtun park. He took pride in the park and
cared for the flowers and trees as though they were in his own yard.
About a year ago failing health compelled him to give up this work.
Funeral services were held at his home at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon
for the benefit of his invalid wife who survives him. Services were held
at the Methodist church at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. Paul K. Corley, pastor of
the church officiated at both services and Miss Betty Sullivan, soloist
at both services, was accompanied by Miss Ethelyn Starkebaum.
Graveside services and interment were at 3:30 at the Haxtun cemetery.
Pallbearers were Messrs. L.W. Griffith, L.E. Taylor, B.J. Anderson, L.L.
Baker, J.D. Birrell and H.M. Downs.
Ellsworth E. Donaldson was
born in Ohio. He came to Denver in 1905 and 12 years later moved to
Haxtun to make his home. He was preceded in death by his son and he
leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Chase Donaldson, one
daughter, Mrs. Bernice Durflinger, one grandson, Dr. Earl Dean Donaldson
of Long Beach, California, a great granddaughter, Diane Donaldson, and a
multitude of friends and business associates.
