GEORGE CONKLIN DIES SUDDENLY: RITES SATURDAY
George C. Conklin,
68, well known Holyoke man and a resident of this community more than
half a century, died suddenly on Wednesday afternoon of last week,
November 26, 1952, while working near the Holyoke Cooperative
Association elevator.
Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Mr. Conklin seemed to be feeling as well as usual when he returned to
work at the elevator after the lunch hour. He was seen behind the
elevator at 1:15 o'clock, cleaning up some grain that had been spilled,
and his body was found about 10 minutes later in the same location.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the
local Methodist church under the direction of Rev. H.R. Bauer, assisted
by Rev. Louis A. Haruf of Yuma, former pastor of the church here. Burial
was in Holyoke Memorial Park.
One of a family of ten children,
George Cleveland Conklin was born January 9, 1885, at Odebolt, Iowa to
James W.L. and Mary Ann [Preston] Conklin. When he was 13 years old, in
1898, the family traveled to Colorado by covered wagon and settled just
one mile east of the old Hilltop school.
On October 9, 1919, Mr.
Conklin was united in marriage with Rosa B. Stephens at Kalispell,
Montana. To this union were born four sons and three daughters.
Mr. Conklin had been employed at the Co-Op Elevator 29 1/2 years. He was
a good workman and was described as a "fixed asset" by the manager of
the elevator. He was a member of the Holyoke Presbyterian church, and
for many years was an active member of the I.O.O.F. lodge.
Surviving Mr. Conklin are his wife; three sons, Harvey, Robert and
Frank, all of Holyoke; three daughters, Ruth and Margaret of Holyoke,
and Mrs. Dora Tatum, Sedgwick; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Show, Mrs. Edith
Kinch and Mrs. Minnie White, Holyoke, and eight grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Wesley Conklin; five
brothers and one sister.

Rosa Belle Stephens was born
October 7, 1899 in Kalispell, Montana to James Nicholas and Sarah
Katherine Yenne Stephens. She passed away on October 12, 1999, just five
days after her 100th birthday, at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke,
where she had been a resident since 1993.
Rose was raised in
Flathead County, Montana and married George Cleveland Conklin on October
9, 1919 in Kalispell. After their marriage they moved to her husband's
home in Holyoke and lived in Holyoke the rest of their lives.
George and Rose raised seven children: James Wesley, Dora Ione,
George
Frank, Robert Lewis, John Harvey, Ruth Marie, and Margaret Lee.
She will be well remembered by those who knew her for her delight in
playing cards, love of visiting with family and friends, and for her
quick wit and sense of humor.
Rose was preceded in death by her
husband on November 26, 1952; son James Wesley Conklin, August 2, 1947;
son George Frank Conklin, February 18, 1967; daughter Margaret Lee
Beattie, May 4, 1986; granddaughter Joyce Tatum Carr, December 20, 1997;
grandson Randel Wesley Conklin, August 26, 1976; great-grandson Troy
Allen Buck, February 23, 1980; and great-great-granddaughters Jamie Lyn
Brown, November 16, 1990 and Sophie Leigh Noisewater, July 21, 1999.
She will be greatly missed by surviving daughters Dora Tatum and
husband Herman of Ovid; Ruth Hinnegan and husband Frank of Fort Collins;
sons Robert Conklin and wife Ardis and Harvey Conklin, all of Holyoke;
16grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 27 great-great-grandchildren,
as well as many other relatives and friends.
Services were held
at the First Christian Church in Holyoke on October 15, 1999, with Jim
Blake officiating. Burial was at Holyoke Memorial Park.
