Alonzo Richard and Emma Church Obituary

RITES MONDAY FOR A.R. CHURCH, 89; RESIDENT 39 YEARS
 
A.R. Church, 89, a resident of this community for 39 years, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 20, at the East Phillips County Hospital here. He entered the hospital on February 18.
 
Rosary was recited at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service was conducted at the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. John C. Walsh officiating. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park. The Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 
A son of Frederick and Ellen Church, Alonzo Richard Church was born November 10, 1874, at Dubuque, Iowa. The family moved to Alexandria, Nebraska when he was 1½ years old and Mr. Church spent his boyhood there.
He vividly remembered the famous blizzard of 1888, which occurred when he was 14 years old.
 
After residing at Alexandria for a number of years, the family moved to a farm south of Daykin, Nebraska where Mr. Church grew to manhood. In 1903 he was united in marriage to Emma J. Nun of Alexandria. To this union six children were born, four sons and two daughters, all of whom survive.
 
In 1910 the family moved to a farm south of Fairbury, Nebraska and to Fairbury in 1922. On March 8, 1925 they moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Holyoke. Ten years later, Mr. and Mrs. Church, affectionately known as "Pop" and "Mom" to their family and many friends, purchased the former Jim Hoover residence in Holyoke, where they have since resided. In 1937 Mr. Church and one of his sons, Fred, purchased and operated the Church Recreation Parlor until 1944.
 
Mr Church was a baseball enthusiast. He played baseball as a youth at Daykin, Nebraska and later followed the Holyoke teams for many years.
 
He was employed as night marshal here for some time and later served as justice of the peace of several years.
 
In April 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Church celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with open house for family and friends. On April 15, 1963 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
 
Surviving Mr. Church are his wife, Emma; four sons, Julian, Sedgwick, Fred, Holyoke, William, Idaho Springs, and Henry, Denver; two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Kennicutt, Grant, Nebraska and Mrs. Mary Ellen Massman, Denver; 16
grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
 
Preceding Mr. Church in death were his parents, two brothers and one sister.
 
 
ALONZO RICHARD CHURCH

MRS. EMMA CHURCH DIES SUDDENLY; FUNERAL SATURDAY
 
Mrs. Emma Church, longtime resident of Holyoke, passed away at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Melissa Memorial Hospital following an illness of only a few hours.
 
Mrs. Church, who was 84 years of age, was quite active and had attended a club meeting Wednesday afternoon. She was stricken that evening at her home and was taken to the hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
 
Rosary rites were held at 8:30 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Funeral services were conducted at the church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6, with Rev. John C. Walsh officiating. Arrangements were in charge of the Lewis Funeral Home. Interment was at Holyoke Memorial Park.
 
As Emma Josephine Nunn the third of 16 children of Andrew and May Ann Nunn, Mrs. Church was born July 21, 1882, at Alexandria, Nebraska. The family home was on a farm southeast of Alexandria.
 
On April 15, 1902 she was united in marriage to Alonzo Richard Church at Fairbury, Nebraska. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive. The family resided on a farm southeast of Fairbury until 1923 and then moved to Fairbury. In March, 1925, the Church family moved to a farm southwest of Holyoke. Mr. and Mrs. Church resided there until 1935, when they moved to Holyoke. Their home since 1939 had been 641 South Baxter, where Mrs. Church continued to reside after the death of her husband on February 20, 1964.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Church were familiarly known as “Pop” and “Mom” by many people in this community. Mrs Church, a member of St. Patrick’s Church, had been active in church work and was also an active member of several clubs.
 
Mrs. Church is survived by four sons, Edward Julian and Alonzo Frederick, both of Holyoke, Henry William, Denver, and William Donald, Grand Junction; two daughters, Mary Ellen (Mrs. Hubert) Massman, Denver, and Catherine Frances (Mrs. Ernest) Kennicutt, Grant, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Gillespi, Deadwood, Oregon, Mrs. Gertrude Rennick, Greenville, Mississippi, and Miss Minnie Nunn, Fairbury, Nebraska; 18 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
 
Preceding Mrs. Church in death were 12 brothers and sisters.
