Mr. Burge had owned and managed the hotel for about 11 years, having taken over the management during the spring of 1922. It became a popular place for the traveling public and traveling men often drove many miles merely to spend the night at the local hotel. Several years ago Mr. Burge erected a fireplace in the lobby of the hotel, dedicated to the "Knights of the Grip." The place was built from stones and relics gathered by the traveling public from all over the United States and many foreign countries, and carried a large plaque with the names of many of the donors. It attracted attention all over the country, and pictures of the place appeared in syndicated features in many dailies and magazines.

Mr. Burge was born at Gravity, Iowa, April 15, 1877 and received his early education there. In 1894 he located in Alvin, Texas, where he managed a general store for three years, and then went to Purdy, Missouri, where he and his brother, Henry, conducted a dry goods store.

Mr. Burge was married to Jett Harris at Fayetteville, Arkansas, June 27, 1900 and the couple moved to Conway, Iowa in 1902. Later Mr. Burge sold his interest and moved to Long Beach, California, and then returned to Sharpsburg, Iowa in 1910 and operated a store until 1914, when Mr. Burge went into the real estate business in Creston, Iowa, from which place he and his wife came to Holyoke.

Mr. Burge served for several years as a member of the town board, and was also secretary-manager of the local telephone company for many years.

Surviving Mr. Burge are two sisters, Mrs. M.E. Dunlavy of Sterling, and Mrs. Martha McGee of Nemo, South Dakota, and three brothers, Henry of Conway, Iowa, Harlan of Gering, Nebraska and Chauncey of Long Beach, California, besides several nieces and nephews.

The obituary read by Rev. Joy is as follows:

Jett I. Harris was born in Harris, Arkansas, on March 24, 1882. The town of Harris was named for her father, who was a Union soldier. The Harris family were old settlers of Arkansas. When their daughter was thirteen years old they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Here the young lady attended the University of Arkansas, and here she married Pearl Burge. Mr. and Mrs. Burge went to live in Purdy, Missouri, where Mr. Burge was in the mercantile business. They went from Purdy to Conway, Iowa, where they resided for eight years. In Conway Mr. Burge was in business with his brother, Henry. After a delightful rest in California, Mr. and Mrs. Burge made their home in Sharpsburg, Iowa for a time and then moved to Creston, Iowa. In 1915 they came to Holyoke and have made this their home since that time. After four years as a merchant, Mr. Burge went into the hotel business, in which his wife was his very efficient and charming helper.

Mrs. Burge passed away on June 8 at eight o’clock in the evening. She is survived by her devoted husband and by two sisters, one of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, and the other of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

When a young woman Mrs. Burge united with the Christian church.

Mrs. Burge was known among her many friends of Holyoke as a woman of business ability. She has been of real assistance to her husband in operating the Hotel Burge and has helped greatly in creating there an atmosphere that has made the traveling men, “Her Boys” as she called the, drive many miles out of the way in order to spend the night there.

Mrs. Burge was a lover of the beautiful, wherever found. She was a woman of grace and dignity, one who was admired by all who knew her. She never complained of her own ailments, but gave largely of her sympathy to others who were in distress of any kind.
