HOLYOKE GIRL IS KILLED IN WRECK AT JUNIATA, NEBRASKA

Leona Buckles Is Crushed Under Car. Other Occupants Are Only Slightly Injured As Auto Turns Over Three Times On Curve

Leona Buckles, 12, of Holyoke was instantly killed in an auto wreck at Juniata, Nebraska, about eight o’clock Saturday night, while enroute to Mound City, Missouri with her mother, Mrs. Hazel Buckles, and three other children. Lyle Wettstein, brother of Mrs. Buckles, was driving the car when he came upon a curve in the road without warning, the car going into the ditch and turning over three times.

Leona was thrown out of one of the windows, the opposite side of the car falling on her as it turned over, crushing her head and chest.

In addition to Wettstein, Mrs. Buckles and the four children, Ernest Wettstein, father of Mrs. Buckles and Floyd Koberstein of Holyoke were in the car. None of the other occupants of the car were seriously hurt, Lyle Wettstein suffering two cracked ribs, while the others suffered only minor bruises.

Mrs. Buckles and the children were on their way to Mound City, where they were to make their home. Following the accident they returned to Holyoke, Rodney Wettstein, another brother of Sterling, going after them. All of the party returned to Holyoke Tuesday, the body of Leona being left at Hastings, Nebraska.

No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral of the girl, but it is expected that the body will be brought back to Holyoke for burial.

While the car was damaged considerably in the wreck, it was driven back to Holyoke under its own power. One wheel was torn off and another had to be replaced on the trip home. Aside from the top, the body was damaged only slightly.
