JOHN ALFRED BJORKLUN
Phillips County Herald, Vol. XXXVII
- No. 28, March 19, 1925
John Alfred Bjorklun was born July 8th
1849 in Saby Parish Jonkopings Diocese, Snialand, Sweden.
He was
united in marriage to Anne Sophie Spets, April 2nd, 1868. This union was
blessed with ten children, of which four died in infancy, six are
living; two sons and four daughters.
Together with his family of
wife and four children he immigrated to the United States of America in
the spring of 1881. At first they made their home in Dayton, Iowa. After
three years they moved to Wahoo, Nebraska where they remained for three
years. In the spring of 1887 they moved to Fairfield, Phillips County,
Colorado. Fairfield was **** a sandy bleak and barren prairie, that is
38 years ago. They were then among the very first settlers in that
locality. It meant privations, determination and hard work, but with
faith in God and an ardent love to his dear family he attained his
cherished goal, the erection and maintenance of a happy Christian home
and financial independency.
He was a gentleman, very much
interested in the welfare of others. His kindness of heart and stalwart
Christian character gained for him a name honored and highly respected
in Fairfield and the neighboring communities. While yet a youth he gave
his heart to Christ. He was a Christian not only by name but by a
genuine conversion into the new life which never fails to express itself
in Christian noble living. He took a very active part in the work of
this (The Fairfield Mission) church from its very first beginning. The
spiritual interest and welfare of the community he always kept near his
heart. In every duty entrusted to him he was faithful, yes faithful into
death.
The call from up yonder came quite suddenly. (Tuesday the
10th of March 1925). But our brother was ready. Blessed are they who are
ready. Triumphantly testifying of the Lord's power to save and to keep
he crossed the border-line to ever be with his dear redeemer Jesus
Christ. He was then at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 22 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure the wife Anne Sophie Bjorklun, four
daughters, Mrs. Hanna Olivia Paulson, Mrs. Ellen Sophie Holmquist, Mrs.
Esther Lydia Wahlstrom, and Mrs. Hulda Caroline Eckman, two sons, Carl
John and August Emil, sixteen grandchildren and three great
grandchildren; also one brother, August Peterson of Basset, Nebraska and
a host of friends.
Funeral services were held in the Fairfield
Mission Church, Saturday March 14th. A large floral offering decorated
the beautiful casket. One quartette and one trio served with singing.
Rev. A. Smithberg assisted by Rev. C.E. Douhan officiated. Interment was
made in the Fairfield Church cemetery.
