"Walter and Webster Carter (Cartier) enlisted in the 34th Infantry in Champlain about 5 weeks after Lincoln's call for 75.000 men. They were assigned to Captain Davis Rich's Company D that was made up of men who enlisted in the Town of Champlain. The brothers were two of the 66 privates that were enrolled expecting to serve for two years.
The regiment went to Washington in July after organizing in Albany and, by September, they were patrolling along the Potomac west of the capital. In April 1862, they started their journey up the Virginia Peninsula, heading toward Richmond in the Army of the Potomac under General McClellan. During May, June, and July they sustained over 150 casualties. They stayed at Harrison's Landing until August 15th and in September joined the Maryland Campaign.
On September 17th they received 154 casualties at the battle of Antietam including 98 wounded. Webster was wounded and eventually lost the thumb on his right hand. He spent the next four months in hospital in Philadelphia until he was discharged.
Walter moved on with regiment which was ordered to Falmouth, VA, then. crossing the Rappahannock River, in December, they spent four days fighting in Fredericksburg in the middle of the month and received 35 more casualties. In May of 1863, just before the 34th mustered out, they participated in the Battles of Marye's Heights and Salem Church receiving minor casualties. The regiment returned to Albany and were mustered out on June 30th.
The sons of Ira Cartier and Charlotte Saxe spent the rest of their lives between New York, Vermont where their father was born and Quebec, their mother's birthplace."

valley for the past fifteen years. Coming down from the
northern part of the state. He is operating an
eighty-acre farm, and says that his crops last season
averaged up very well. He had twelve acres of wheat which
went fifty-five bushels to the acre and tested sixty six
pounds to the bushel. Fifteen acres of sugar beets
averaged ten tons per acre, while he had 100 tons of
alfalfa. Mr. Moore, however, ls devoting a large part
of his time to breeding and raising Percheron horses.
He has twenty-five head of horses on his place at
