October 1917 "Mrs. Julia Davis, mother of Mrs. J. A. Essex and Mrs. Frank Merrell,
of Sterling, was seriously bruised and perhaps internally injured in Brush Saturday night,
when the livery car in which she was riding was struck by another car.
She is now at her home in Sterling.
Mrs. Davis went to Brush Saturday to visit friends. The train was late and the
people who were to meet her missed the train. She started for the home in a hired car.
The driver was running in low when he turned a corner and came out in front of another car
in which were three boys. The latter car was on the wrong side of the road and
was going at a fast speed. The driver barely missed a man and woman who were pushing a
baby carriage and, while looking back, drove straight into the car in which Mrs.
Davis was riding. Mrs. Davis was hurled ten feet from the car. Fortunately the car in
which she was riding was an open one, and she did not strike any obstructions.
She was taken into the house of Roy Bruebaker, where she remained until Wednesday night,
when she was brought home. Her condition now is somewhat serious.
One of the boys riding In the other car was hurt, and it is thought probable that
his spine was broken. He is a member of the Christian Science church, however,
and refused the attention of any doctor."

"Kathryn Jane Merrell, 93, of Sterling, died Friday, June 15, 2001 in Sterling.
Visitation, will be from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, at Tennant with the Rev. John Hammond officiating. Burial will be at Sun set Memorial Gardens in Sterling. A reception and refreshments for friends and family following the burial service will be at the First Christian Chureh.
Kathryn was born on Sept. 13, 1907 to Walter E. and Emma Mae (McCarty) Gartrell in Sommerset, Neb. The family moved to Sterling in 1913. She attended Sterling schools.
On Jan. 24, 1925 Kathryn married Carter "Pat" Merrell. They lived at 304 Platte St., which was the old Merrell homestead that had been moved to town. They also spent about two years in LaGrange, Wyo. In 1931 they moved to a cabin on 160 acres in the mountains near Paonia.
In 1932 they returned to Sterling with their growing family. For the next few years Kathryn worked for the railroad cleaning passenger cars at night. She also worked for the White Kitchen Bakery during the days for many years.
They had seven children. The first, Donald, died shortly after birth. Their other children were Donna, Opal, Robert, Jean, June and Jim. Raising six children during the depression was difficult and there were some tough times, but Kathryn kept her priorities straight, family first, no matter what the sacrifice. One year later, Pat went to the mountains to work on the Taylor Dam because there was no work here. Kathryn stayed home and cared for all the kids as well as work ing at various local restaurants part-time. Both Pat and Kathryn were proud of the fact that even with six kids, during the depres sion and illness and hard times, they never once accepted any public assistance. They did it the hard way and on their own.
Even during the hard times it was important to both that all the kids had what was needed and enjoyed life. There were many picnics and roasting-ear roasts down along the river bottom, swimming parties and ice skating days. Short trips around the coun try became all day events.
Kathryn enjoyed all of her family and extended family. She also enjoyed traveling. As a family they visited almost all the states, including Alaska. They also traveled to Mexico. After the kids were grown and Pat passed away, she still traveled. She visit ed Hawaii and Europe. She was active in Senior Citizens and was a life-long member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening and card parties with her friends. She also enjoyed oil painting and art classes and keeping active.
She was a loving mother who will be sadly missed by family and friends alike.
Kathryn is survived by a sister, Maude Norris of Denver; children, Donna Dexter of Atwood, Opal Merrell Burton of Mojave, Calif., Robert Merrell and wife Edna of Nunn, June Merrell Lauer and husband Pete of Sterling and James Merrell and wife Bona of Atwood; 17 grandchildren, Christie Clark, Verlia Dexter, Nancy McClune, Mike Burton, Terry Burton, Roberta Herrin, Rebecca Wolever, Charles Merrell, Robert Merrell Jr., Nicholas Merrell, Sandy Clark, Mark Atkins, Kelly Atkins, Deb Egbert, Valerie Frank, Ann Matthies, and Pete Lauer Jr.; 32 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in passing by her husband of 58 years, Carter "Pat" Merrell; a daughter, Jean Merrell Atkins and husband Don; a son, Donald Merrell; three brothers, Pat Gartrell, Guy Gartrell and James Gartrell; and three sisters, May Gartrell Leper, Pearl Monthie and Opel Harding."
