May 1894 Grand Junction " Samuel Moore returned this morning from an extended trip
to California and the Mid-winter fair. He says tho orohardists of that famous fruit
state are not expecting the usual big crop this season;
the spring frosts have done much damage; the grain and hay crop
will be a great deal less than ono-half of last year's,
and taking everything together Mr. Moore says he found no
section of country in any of tho states or territories west of
us through which he traveled, that has as good an outlook
for the future as Grand valley. In California,
says our informant, the system of irrigation is carried out
on altogether different lines than those here in vogue.
Water is not nearly so abundant and the ditches are very
much smaller and, in most sections, especially for orchard
irrigation, pipes and conduits of various kinds are used for
distributing the water, which in some places sells as high
as 60 cents per hour per inch. This last statement,
while literally true, is enough to make the hair of a Grand
valley farmer stand on end."
