May 1909 " William M. Frobes, a guest at the home of W. B. Mentgen, died Friday of last week, after a very brief illness with pneumonia, a weak heart contributing to the disease’s fatality. Mr. Frobes, with his wife, had come to Sterling from Edina, Mo., and had been guests of the Mentgen families here for a week, Mr. Frobes having assisted in invoicing the Henderson, Powell & Blair hardware stock, which Mentgen Bros, were purchasing. Mr. Frobes was aged 49 years. The remains were taken East for interment."

June 22, 1939 Diller, Nebraska "Miss Donna Weddle became the bride of
Lawrence Mentgen Saturday morning, June 17, at 7 o'clock at a nuptial mass
read by the Rev. E. Versihraeghen at St. Anthonys Catholic church,
Mrs. R. A. Connley played the wedding march from Lohengrin, as the bridal
party formed and during the mass L. G. Giacomini sang Ave Marie.
The bride was lovely in an afternoon frock trimmed with two shades
of purple velvet, a large purple picture hat, and shoes and gloves to
match. Her flowers were a shoulder corsage of Talisman roses.
She was attended by... Fern wore a French blue afternoon dress with hat
to match and white accessories. Miss Krukow's flowers were like the
shoulder corsage. Bill Mentgen, brother of the bridegroom,
was the best man.
Following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served to members of
the wedding party and immediate members of both families at
Schell chateau. The centerpiece of the table was a tiered wedding cake.
Place-cards were minature brides and bridegrooms.
Mrs. Mentgen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Weddle of
Sterling. She was graduated from the Sterling High school and for a
number of years has been employed at the Woolworth store. Mr. Mentgen is the son of
Mrs. Rose Mentgen. He was graduated from the St. Anthony parochial school
and is employed at the J. C. Penney company store."

"Lawrence "Larry" Mentgen, 89, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Sterling, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Colorado Springs. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 with vigil and rosary at 7 p.m. at Tennant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 13 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. James Baird officiating. Burial
will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Mentgen was born August 16, 1914 to William Peter and
Rose Virginia (Fink) Mentgen of 131 Lincoln St. in Sterling,
where he lived for more than 60 years. He attended and graduated from
St. Anthony's School. He attended business school for two years.
He worked at Welsh Grain and Feed Co., later known as Lousberg Grain and Feed,
for 36 years. On June 16, 1939 he married Donna Weddle,
and they had three children: David, Susan and Laurel.
When Susan died in 1964, Mr. and Mrs. Mentgen adopted their
granddaughter Dawn. Mrs. Mentgen died in 1975.
Mr. Mentgen then married Della Weddle McWhirter on April 16, 1977.
Mr. Mentgen's retirement allowed them to travel extensively as they did
genealogical research, and they visited 48 of the 50 states.
They returned to Sterling in 1993 and made their home on Beattie Street.
They moved to Colorado Springs in 1996.
Mr. Mentgen was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a lifetime member the Elks.
He is survived by Della Mentgen, of Colorado Springs; son David Mentgen, of Gautier, Miss; daughters Laurel Westbrook, of Sterling, and Dawn Gamler, of Seattle, Wash.; stepchildren Robert McWhirter, of Colorado Springs, and Margaret Stribling, of Oklahoma City; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Donna; daughter Susan; brother William; and a grandchild at birth."

December 28, 1928 "Mrs. Harriet May Smith, aged 74,
a resident of north Webster county since the early ...,
passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stella Baum of Callaway,
Sunday, following a second stroke of paralysis.
For about 48 years Mrs. Smith has been a resident of Blue Hill.
She was a faithful member of the Christian church and had a large
circle of friends, whose companionship she greatly enjoyed.
She is survived by two sons, Clyde and Charles, Red Cloud business men,
and four daughters, Mrs. Irene Merritt and
Mrs. Myrtle McLeod of Blue Hill, Mrs. Marguerite Mentgen of Sterling,
Colo., and Mrs. Stella Baum of Calloway. One daughter, Mildred Horn,
passed away several years ago. Fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren
and one brother Ira El Parks of Tomahawk, Wis. also survive her. Funeral services were held at Blue Hill
Wednesday and interment was made in the Blue Hill cemetery."
