March 20, 1924 Sterling "Word reached Sterling yesterday of the death of Charles G. Wheldon at his home in Lindsay, Calif., on March 4. Mr. Wheldon will be remembered by the older residents of Logan county, he having resided for many years at Atwood. He left here in 1905 for California. Mr. Wheldon was 85 years of age at the time of his death. His wife died on February 3. Two months ago Mr. and Mrs. Wheldon celebrated their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary.
Mr. Wheldon was a Civil War veteran and a full military burial was given him by members of the American Legion of Lindsay. In speaking of his life, the Lindsay, Calif.. Gazetter has the following:
“Wr. Wheldon was a pioneer of several states, having followed the march of progress until 1905, when he came to California and settled in Lindsay. Since coming here he planted sixty acres of oranges, built four houses, and was otherwise prominently identified with the early development of this section.
Born at Cambridge, New York, on May 27, 1838, Wheldon moved to Illinois with the rest of the Wheldon family when but a small boy. He was living there at the outbreak of the Civil War. At the call to arms he went to Troy, New York, where he enlisted. He served with the Union forces for two years and was honorably discharged with a wound to his trigger finger. He fought in many battles under Generals McClellan and Burnside. After the war, Wheldon returned to New York, where he secured work on a farm at what was then considered a good wage $10 a month. There he married Miss Mary Bethany Wood on December 29, 1869, at Canandaigua. Despite the small pay on the farm, young man had managed to save enough money to begin farming for himself on shares. He was highly successful at this, and in 1880 decided to move with his family then increased by the birth of four children, to Kansas. It was in 1880 that the Wheldons became Kansans. Here he farmed for six years, during which time three more children were added to the family.
Again he was successful, but the lure of the West called and he moved on to Colorado. Here he purchased another farm and also took up government land. He raised grain and a considerable herd of stock, winning a state prize for his excellent farming results.
It was in 1905 that Wheldon came to California. He settled at Lindsay, where he bought thirteen acres west of town and planted an orange grove. He worked this acreage until 1907, when he sold. He then enjoyed a vacation for several months, visiting relatives in Washington and elsewhere. Returning to Lindsay in the following year, he purchased twenty seven acres of land west of Lindsay, planting another orange grove.
He retained this until several yearn ago, when he sold it to his son, Ham Wheldon.
Surviving him today are five children, ail of Lindsay. They are: tw< sons, William and Harry, and three daughters. Mrs. Henry Witmer, Mrs. Charles Long and Mrs. Merle Wilson."
