ALMA
October 12, 1906 "Thursday evening, shortly after ven o'clock, Will Remick shot seven and killed his wife and himself, at the home of Mrs. Remick, on Park avenue. They had been separated since some time last winter, and Mrs.
Remick had filed suit for divorce. They had hac1 some trouble before, and at one time this last spring Mr. Remick kidnapped one of the children, a boy about ten years old, and took him to Kansas City. Mrs. Remick followed them and recovered possession of the child, and returned here, where she has been living with her three children, a girl of 18, a boy of 10 and a girl of 7 years of age.
Mrs. Remick and her children had been living in the property belonging to the Baptist church, and was well spoken of by her neighbors. Since the separation of the fam ily Mr. Remick has traveled over the country a great deal, making his headquarters in Kansas City, where he has a married siser liv ing. He had recently Icoated at Kinsley, Kansas, and is said to have bought a restaurant.
He came to this city Thursday morn ing on the train from the west, and spent practically all the after noon in the office of his attorney prepaing a coss bill to his wife's petition for divorce. This was completed and. filed with the clerk of court just before six o'clock Thursday evening. He had attended to several other little matters of business around town, and had said that he intended to take the evening train back to Kinsley. It is said that Remick had at various times threatened to kill his wife, and she being afraid of him, had one of the hack drivers to keep her posted as to his comings and goings to and from this city.
Cal Keenan, a bus driver for Mike Dailey, had gone to Mrs. Remick's home that evening to tell her that her husband was in town, and was standing on the porch talking to her when Remick came to the house. Keenan says that Remick had the gun in his right hand as he stepped upon the porch, and that he, Keenan, grabbed his right wrist. Then Remick shifted the revolver into his left hand and began firing. When Mrs.
Remick saw what was coming she started into the house and fell about half way across the room, with three bullets in her body. One struck her in the head, another in the throat and the third one in the breast. Remick then turned the revolver and fired one shot into his brain dying almost instantly. The three children were all in the room where both their parents were killed, and as soon as possible after the neighbors had realized what had happened, they were taken across the street to the residence of Mrs. Chas Pressl, where they were given all the care and attention that good people can give to those in dis-tress.
The older daughter was in a very hysterical condition, and needed considerable attention. Mr. Remick was one of the old settlers in this part of coming here at an early day but not staying here all the time since. He had lived in Wichita, Hutchinson, and several places in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana returning to this city with his family about five years ago. He had been engaged in various, business enterprises in this city and elsewhere but principally engaged in buying and selling- horses.
Mrs. Remick's parents now live at Salt Lake City, Utah,
and formerly lived on the north side of the county.
There are some of the family sill living at
Hoisington."
