Sterling last Thursday, enroute to visit Mrs. Sumner Dilly, a sister of Mr. Hughes, who resides in the
vicinity of Merino. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes are owners of the Record in their home city,
and are very pleasant peopLe to meet. Mr. Hughes has not seen liis sister for 23 years,
and the visit will be particularly enjoyable to both. "
October 1909 "A. P. Hughes, of Deep River, Iowa, was in Sterling last week,
and filed on the northwest quarter of section 26, 7, 54, five miles north of Merino.
The land had by some means been overlooked by the homesteaders who have been scouring the country for
claims, and Mr. Hughes is fortunate in getting so desirable a homestead near a good town like Merino.
Mr. Hughes is editor of the Record at Deep River and visited in Colorado in the summer,
accompanied by hie wife. "

Born Nov. 29, 1879, at Keswick, Mrs. Hughes had assisted and operated a weekly newspaper at Norway for many years before coming to Cedar Rapids. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. W. D. Hatfield of Cedar Rapids; a son, Jesse D. Hughes of Columbia, S.C.; her mother, Louisa J. Green, and two brothers, Orlan Green and Wilbur Green, all of What Cheer; a brother, Edwin Green, and a sister, Sylvia Thatcher, both of Oskaloosa; a sister, Mrs. Gail Smith of Waukegan, Ill.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted in the Beatty-Beurle Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Norway Cemetery."

Lawrence Reuben Caldwell, 813 Thirty-Sixth St. NE, a trucker for Western Transportation Company, died at 12:4 a.m. Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Fairfax. Born Sept. 9, 1913, at West Union, he had been a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1919. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Caldwell, a son, Larry Caldwell, and his father, Earl A. died yesterday at Richland Memorial Hospital. Born in Deep River, Iowa, he was a son of the
late Alonzo Parrish and Lissie Green Hughes. Mr. Hughes retired from the U.S. Postal Service
after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church,
and church treasurer from 1956 to 1971. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Kibler Hughes,
a daughter, Mrs. Linda Kay Stout of Wilmington, N.C., a son, Don Hughes, of Columbia,
and three grandchildren."
