Hayes Center "Stephen Hiett, one of the early settlers of
Hayes county, died at his home in Antelope precinct on
Tuesday, November 26th, 1901, of heart disease,
and was laid to rest in the Antelope cemetery on Wednesday,
November 27th. The funeral services were conducted by Rev.
Terry and were largely attended by the friends of the deceased.
Mr. Stephen Hiett was 60 yean old, and has resided in the
west part bf Hayes county for the past 16 years,
except a short time when he returned to Missouri,
he has always been a loyal, honest, upright citizen,
and was highly respected by all who knew him.
He leaves a widow, two danghters, Mrs. Maggie Witt,
Mrs. Mattie Flint, and one son, Ed Hiett,
to mourn his departure."

June 9, 1921 "Houses were moved from their foundations, stores wrecked and roads destroyed at Caddoa
Sunday by the flood, according to confirmed reports reaching this place from there yesterday.
Probably the greatest damage was done to the lumber yard of Trosel Brothers and to the hotel building.
Lumber from the yard was scattered for miles down the river. Hundreds of feet of it and thousands of
shingles and lath will never be recovered. The hotel building was moved over two hundred yards from its
foundation and left on the lumber yard site. It floated gently away, according to W. S. Flint,
a resident of the section laying to the south of Caddoa.
A lamp on a center table in one of the main rooms remained upright when the flood had cleared away and
the building was resting on its new locaton.
The Caddoa Tradng Company store and the Davis general store were both flooded to a depth of nearly
four feet, according to Mr. Flint. A large quantity of flour and feed stored in the rear of the Davis
store is a total loss. Owners and clerks of both stores received word in advance of the flood,
and moved merchandise from the floors to to tables and high shelves. In this way much
merchandise was saved.
The wagon bridge went out and stands a total wreck. The town of Caddoa occupies a peculiar location
in relation to the river, is the claim. When the water came down the town was on the outside
of a huge whirlpool, carrying everything in a circle, before floating objects took a course down the
river. This accounts for the unusual dearrangement of the town after the water had passed.
Twelve thousand pounds of wool, stored in the warehouse at this place, was flooded by high water. Nearly one half of it is damaged, and Wednesday workmen were busy emptying the house and spreading the product out to dry. The bottom layer had heated to such an extent that it was almost impossible to handle it.
The wool will be cleaned and re-sacked but must be marketed at a greatly reduoed price, wool men say."
