She had been a resident of North Platte, Neb, for th past 10 years,
during which time she attended the North Platte high school,

was married to Everett Newton, July 18, 1932.
To this union were born four children: Elaine Frances, 11;

She departed thi life on Feb. 13, 1947. at the age of 34.

Mont, formerly of North Platte. The wedding date has been set for December
17, and will take place in Great Falls. The bride-to-be is the daughter of
G. F. Coverdell of Camby, Ore., who formerly lived here.
She was graduated from the North Platte high school with the class of
1934. During ths past few years she has been employed as stenographer in
the office of Attorney James.
Mr. Alexander made North Platts his home for two years,
until last August, he moved to Great Falls.
During his stay in this city, he was employed by radio station KGNF.
He was graduated from high school in Lake City, Minn.,
and later studied dramatics at ths University of Minnesota.
The couple will make their home in Great Falls, where the bridegroom-to-be
is employed by radio station KFBB. Miss Coverdell plans to leave
North Platte about December 13."

Dolores L. Priest of Chestertown died Tuesday October 10, 2000 in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was 89 years of age. She was born on August 22, 1911 in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, daughter of the late Grover and Martha Bell Coverdell. They moved to
Baltimore in 1948. For 35 years she worked, as a civilian, in accounting,
for the U.S. Army at Ft. Meade. She was a member of the Audubon Club of
Kent County. She married William L. Priest in 1932. He died in 1995.
She is survived by her daughter, Marian Quick of Chestertown;
a brother Roger Coverdell of Elk Grove,
a sister, Sr. Anna Maria Coverdell of Fair Oaks, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held of Friday, October 13 at 10 a.m. in the Chestertown Baptist Church, Chestertown, where friends my call after 9 a.m. Burial will be in Christ W.

April 1916 "Lola May, the 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin P. Coverdell, died Wednesday
morning at her parents' residence at Chelsea. Death was due to pneumonia. Funeral services
will he held at the residence Friday afternoon."
"Lola, the young daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. P. £overdell,
passed away from her earthly home early in the morning of Wednesday, March 29.
Spasmodic croup was supposed to have been the cause of the little one’s death,
and she only suffered scarcely a day. She was two years and eight months old.
The funeral services were not held until Friday, after the arrival of Mrs. Coverdell’s mother
and a sister of Mr. Coverdell's, both coming from Kansas. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Coverdell
from Atwood and this community in every way express a kind sympathy to the parents in the bereavement
of the sunshine of their home."

Mrs. Park Covcrdell and little son Elwood, who are planning on leaving this week for Wyoming,
where they have taken land. Those present were: Miss Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hollingshead
and daughter Lena, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Coverdell and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Park Coverdell and son.
A very good time was hnd by all and ice cream and cake was served."

March 1919 "Lieut. Vern Coverdell, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Coverdell of Atwood, Logan county, has been cited for bravery and decorated with the Croix de Guerre, ‘and the cross of the Legion of Honor by the French government, according to information received by the boy’'s parents. The c\batlon sets forth that Coverdell, who is a lieutenant in the United States marines, bound up the wounds of three fellow officers before he made known the fact that he had himself been wounded. Lieutenant Coverdell was one 3{ the first boys'to leave Logan county after the United States entered the war."

"Vern Coverdell was born in Allendale, Missouri. He lived there for 4 years before moving to Kalispell, Montana for 4 years and then onto Clayton, Kansas. In 1909 he moved to Atwood, Colorado. He married Gertrude Kaiser 17 May 1921 in Brush, Colorado. They had 2 beautiful daughters. Vern served in the Marine Corps during World War l in France and Germany. He was wounded 3 times. One of the times was near St. Etienne, France 4 Oct 1918. He dressed his own wounds and those of three men near him while under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He reorganized his platoon, strengthened his position and made a written report before allowing himself to be evacuated. This is documented in a letter from the Secretary of the Navy , Josephus Daniels for the President, 11 Nov 1920 in which he was presented the Navy Cross. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart with 2 palms, Silver Star, WWl Army of Occupation Medal, the French Croix de Guerre and French Fourragerre. After the war, he worked for the Sterling Advocate and was Logan County Treasurer from 1925-1928.
He served in the Army during World War II,
receiving the American Defense, Pacific-Asiatic Theater,
WW II Victory and Japan Army of Occupation medals. During WWII he held
various positions. In 1941 he went through the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. He was in Commanding Officer at several POW (internment) Camps , one being in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In 1946 he was at Headquarters Okinawa Base Command and other parts of the Pacific the letters to his family at this time had a lot of history. Vern retired as a full colonel. From 1946 until his retirement in 1963, he worked for the Veteran's Administration Regional Office in Sterling and Grand Junction, Colorado. He was a man of integrity and fairness. Respected and loved by many. Richard Davis, a second cousin to Gertrude, and his wife Janet met one of the POW's years later. They established the connection as they discussed how he ended up in the US from Germany. This gentleman had nothing but respect for Vern."
Phyllis Gertrude Coverdell Smith, beloved wife, of Doyle George Smith, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2018, in Clinton, Utah. She was born on September 21, 1929, in Sterling, Colorado, to Vern Austin and Gertrude Paula (Kaiser) Coverdell. She grew up in Sterling, Colorado.
She and Doyle married September 3, 1950, in Denver, Colorado, and raised their family in Colorado. She graduated from the University of Colorado with her BS Degree as a Registered Nurse, then worked for numerous doctors in Longmont, Colorado.
Phyllis served in many church callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to crochet and made special blankets, hats, and crafts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Deborah K. (Bill) Blick, Pamela S. (Merrill) Smith, Lisa L. (Bill) Lewellen, Doyle M. (Diane) Smith, Kimberly A. (Scott) Hopfenbeck; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Ellen Naurath.
