this place, aged 25 years. She was buried on the 12th, that being her birthday. Her first husband, Benjamin Groff was buried on the 12th of October nine years ago. She leaves three children to the mercy of friends. Her parents have the heart felt sympathy of the Gazette in their bereavement. | OBITUARY Clarinda R. Orvis was born June 22nd, 1859 at Durand, Illinois and died September 16, 1927, at Sargent Nebraska, age 68 years, 2 months and 25 days. When she was about four years old she was taken by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Orvis to Fayette, Iowa, and there the family lived until she was nineteen years of age, when they came to Custer County, Nebraska, arriving here in August, 1878. Mr. Orvis took land, some of which later formed a portion of the townsite of West Union. And this was the home of Clarinda Orvis until November 7, 1878, when she was united in marriage to Henry F. Groff. To this union was born one son that died in infancy. She was married to L. Pope July 10, 1914. She leaves to mourn her untimely death, her mother Mrs. Chaney Orvis of Sargent, Nebraska; a foster daughter, Mrs. Edna (George) Semler of Longmont, Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Whaley of Haxtum, Colorado; and Mrs. Lillie (J. D.) Semler of Sargent, Nebraska; and four brothers, James A. Orvis of Milburn, Nebraska, Wilbur R. Orvis of Portland, Oregon; George R. Orvis and Bert S. Orvis of Walworth, Nebraska. All of the above named were present at the funeral with the excepton of Wilbur R. Orvis of Portland, Oregon. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church sunday afternoon at two o'clock. The singing was by a mixed quartette composed of George Young, Mrs. (Be-- can't read it) Amos, Mrs. H. T. Olson and kenneth Crownover with Mrs. John Lovejoy at the piano. The funeral sermon was given by the pastor, the Rev. John D.Hammel and was one of comfort and hope to all. The pall bearers were John Fort, Bert Smith, Joe Young, A. F. Phillip, Talmadge Sheldon and James W. Lundy. The interment was made in the West Union cemetery. The Minister said in his sermon that living as they did as a neighbor to Mrs. Pope, that he found her to be a generous hearted woman, kind to her mother whom she cared for very tenderly. |

She died in Illinois at the home of her daughter, where she went a year ago. She only lacked two days of being 95 years old. She was buried on her birthday. She was born in Lengester county, PA., in 1819 and went from there to Illinois; from there to Iowa; from there to Nebraska, Custer county; there her husband died, then she lived with her children, and during her last year she made her home with Henry Groff, and came with him to Stanberry; a little over a year ago went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Wilson, at Lewistown, Ill. She was the mother of 12 children and raised 3 grandchildren. She has 44 grandchildren, 74 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren. In the early days she united with what was known as the Free Will Baptist church. She would tell how she and her husband would walk to church and carry their children. When she lived with her children in Nebraska she united with the Lutheran church and after coming to live in Missouri she united with the Christian church at Stanberry. She had been blind for about 5 years, but seemed to be happy. She was kind and affectionate. She would sing and then with a sigh, if I were in heaven I would not be here and it won't be long. Remember the first commandment with the promise, "Honor thy father and mother that thy days shall be long on earth." |
| Haxtun Harvest, Haxtun, Colorado, April 17, 1919 On Monday, April 14, the entire community was deeply shocked by the news of the death of Mrs. R.H. Groff. Although she had been ill for more than two weeks with bronchial pneumonia following at attack of Spanish influenza, hope had been held out for her recovery, and the news of her death came as a distinct shock to her many friends. Nellie Ruth Skoll was born at Pacific Junction, Iowa, on March 14, 1892 and at the time of her death was 27 years and 29 days of age. Her mother, Mrs. Amelia M. Skoll, has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Groff for several years. They have been residents of Haxtun for four years, during which time Mr. Groff held the position of assistant cashier of the Farmers’ State Bank. Both Mr. and Mrs. Groff have been earnest hard workers and Mrs. Groff was one of the most active members of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the Methodist church and was beloved by all who knew her. Since the death of their baby last winter she had been especially devoted to her church work. The funeral services were held at the Groff home, and in the absence of the pastor of the Haxtun Methodist church Rev. Rollin H. Ayres of Sterling delivered the funeral address. The remains were prepared by Mortician Radford and were taken to Sterling Tuesday for burial. The Harvest unites with the friends of the bereaved husband and mother in extending the sincerest sympathy in their loss of a true daughter and wife, and a noble Christian woman. |
