"John Mark Goodpasture, son of Charles and Hulda (Bidlake) Goodpasture, was killed instantly on June 6, 1916, at 1:30 o'clock in the morning in the Denver and Rio Grande fast express passenger train No. 1 westbound wreck near Colton, Utah along with 5 other men. The train was said to have derailed because of a broken rod on a locomotive turning switch, which caused the wreck, flipping over some cars and causing great human damage. Six others were sent to the local hospital.
The train was several hours late and every pound of steam was being utilized to make up lost time when the accident occurred. (Note; There's much more written about this wreck and other trains swerving to avoid it, etc., but they're very hard to read so not adding all the info here.) Doctors etc., were brought in from different areas to help with the dead and injured.
John was found between engines 172 and 1155 and couldn't be identified right away due to extreme injuries.
One of the other men killed was his friend and fellow co-worker, Floyd Cochran. They were both from prominent local families and had been working at the Anita Record Office all winter as printers before taking off to see the world. They were heading towards Blackfoot, Idaho where one of the boys had relatives and they expected to find work.
They had left Anita the previous Sunday, trespassed onto the train and were riding the blind baggage car at the time of the derailment.
Their bodies were shipped home and arrived at Anita on Friday, June 9, 1916.
The two boys were buried in a double funeral service held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the Methodist Church and both were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery. A large concourse of friends attended the services.
Floyd Cochran is the son of George and Cora Cochran, of Exira, Iowa. (Note: he was called both Floyd and Lloyd a number of times in the articles and his mother was called Mary)"
