SHOEMAKER, JOHN

Weekly Jeffersonian, Findlay, OH, Thurs., 19 Sep 1889, page 8. "SHOEMAKER--Mrs. Dan Fishell, of East Findlay, received a telegram from Leadville, Colo., this morning, stating that her uncle, John Shoemaker, had died this morning. The remains will be shipped to this city for internment. Mr. Shoemaker went from this county to the army. At the close of the was he located in Leadville where he has since resided. He is a bachelor and leaves considerable property."

SLOCK - Mrs. Johanna Slock, who died Friday at her home, 714 Elm St., was buried yesterday morning in the Mount of the Holy Cross cemetery following funeral services at St. Joseph's church at 9:30 o'clock. Many friends of the young woman attended the funeral service, and later formed a long cortege which followed the hearse to the cemetery. Rev. John Judnic sang the requiem high mass over the blo0r?, which was buried in a mass of beautiful flowers.

Mrs. Slock died Friday at her home after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, a well-known miner of the Leadville district, and five little children, the oldest nine years. [20 Feb 1920] [Slack]

STEWART, ARTHUR

 At 12:15 yesterday afternoon Arthur Stewart died at his home, 431 East Eighth street, after a hard battle for life. His death, tho somewhat expected, was a shock to his host of friends, and marked the passing of one of Leadville's most honored citizens. During his last illness he was most patient and kind, never complaining of his sufferings but was very thotful and considerate for the ones who nursed him.
 He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, January 19, 1874, where he spent his childhood. When still a youth he went to Boston and worked at various occupations till 1899. At that time he came to Leadville where he has made his home since. He followed mining during his residence here and was most highly thot of among his fellow workmen.
 He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Gladys, age 10 years, one brother, Will of Boston, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. Frank Adams of New York City. Roy Stewart, formerly circulator of the Herald Democrat, is a nephew.
 The funeral will be announced later and the friends and lodges are requested to please omit flowers.

STEWART, ARTHUR

Arthur Stewart was laid to rest yesterday afternoon in the family plot in the A. O. U. W. cemetery following the funeral service at the family home, 431 East Eighth street, which was conducted by the Rev. A. Durrie, of the Presbyterian church. During the service Messrs Bennett and James, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Stephen Clemens, accompanied by Mrs. E. Gross, beautifully rendered "One Sweetly Solemn Thot" "My Ain Country" and "Going Down the Valley". The very large number of friends who attended gave strong evidence of the high esteem in which Mr. Stewart was held. His untimely passing was felt deeply as was so well expressed by the Rev. Durrie.
 The City Council attended in a body, Mrs. Stewart being the city clerk. The Mt. Massive Homestead, B. A. Y., the Knights and ladies of Security and the Loyal Order of Moose were represented.
 Mr. Stewart died Tuesday noon at this home 431 East Eighth street.
 He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Gladys, age 10 years, one brother, Will of Boston, Mass., a sister, Mrs. Frank Adams, of New York City, and a nephew, Roy Stewart, formerly of Leadville.
 The pallbearers were Dan McEachern, E. Locke, Howard Truscott, Alex McLellan, James McGillis, E. Matthews, all were close friends and represented the various lodges of which Mr. Stewart was an esteemed member.

STEWART, LOUISE

Mrs. Louise Stewart Dies Wednesday;
Rites Will be 2:30 Friday
 Mrs. Louise Stewart, 1230 White Avenue, widow of Arthur Stewart, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mesa Memorial hospital following an illness of three weeks.
 Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Callahan chapel, with the Rev. Lowell Renberger officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Leadville at 11:a.m. Saturday. Family requests friends to omit flowers.
 Louise T. Vass was born Feb. 18, 1876, in New Jersey. When she was one year old, her parents and family moved to Colorado, and they settled permanently at Leadville in 1881. She was married to Arthur Stewart Jan. 12, 1910, at Leadville.
 Mr. Stewart died in 1921, and Mrs. Stewart became Leadville city clerk, holding that position until 1928. She remained in Leadville until 1936, when she removed to Denver, and she moved to Grand Junction to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Andrew Ramsey in 1944.
 Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Christian church and Daughters of America at Leadville.
 Surviving are the daughter, one sister, Mrs. Mabel Almandinger, Fort Madison, Iowa, and two grandchildren.

SULLIVAN, EDWIN - Neck Broken By Fall From Horse.
Eleven-Year-Old Leadville Boy Meets Instant Death at Wolcott---Related to
HOLLANDS.

The saddest accident that has ever occurred in Eagle county took place at
Wolcott last Sunday afternoon when Edwin SULLIVAN, of Leadville, fell from a
horse which he was riding and was instantly killed. The boy's neck was
broken when he struck the ground.

Edwin was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis SULLIVAN of Leadville. Mrs.
SULLIVAN is a daughter of Mrs. John HOLLAND, of Wolcott, whom the boy was
visiting with his mother at the time of the fatal accident.

The boy's uncle, Wash HOLLAND, had arranged to go out for a ride and took
the youngster on the horse with him back of the saddle. When Wash dismounted
to open a gate Edwin, in some unaccountable manner lost his balance and
fell. Wash, with remarkable composure under the circumstances, picked up the
lifeless form of the little fellow and carried it to the house. Mr. SULLIVAN
was immediately notified of the very unusual accident which had robbed them
of their son and arrived at Wolcott on the next train.

The parents were totally distracted over the sudden, untimely and unexpected
death of their boy, and Wash suffered a complete mental and - breakdown.

This death cast a gloom over the entire community. Edwin was well liked by
everybody. The remains were shipped to Leadville for interment Monday
Morning. At the depot before the train left the heartbroken parents and
relatives were surrounded by friends whose hearts were sorrowing at the loss

Thomas, Mrs. Maria B.

Mrs. Maria Barton Thomas, a resident of Leadville since 1881, died yesterday morning at her home at 510 East Eighth street, following a gradual decline in health caused by the ills of advanced age.  She was 79 years old.

During recent years, tho her intellect remained unimpaired and her bright and cheerful disposition was untouched, Mrs. Thomas had gradually failed.  It was only in recent weeks, however, that her family had feared her decline was approaching a fatal end.  this week she had weakened markedly.  She passed away peacefully at 5 o'clock in the morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Louise Stewart, which had been her home in late years.

Mrs. Thomas was born in England in 1837.  Her life covered more than the Biblical allotment of three score years and ten and had compassed nearly a century of events.  Her life in this country began in 1872 when she came to the United States.  In that same year she was married to James F. Thomas at Mt. Hope, N.J.  She had lived in Leadville since 1881, one of a large circle of warm friends to whom her loving and optimistic disposition was an invaluable asset.  Her death yesterday was to them a deep loss.

Mrs. Thomas was a devoted member of the Baptist church, and it is at that church that funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 o'clock.  The funeral procession will leave the family home at 2 o'clock.  the casket will be open to view at the home from 4 p.m. Saturday until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, but will not be opened at the church.  In accordance with a request expressed by Mrs. Thomas before her death, friends are asked kindly to omit flowers.

Three children survive to mourn Mrs. Thomas' death.  They are William H. Thomas, of Salt Lake; Mrs. Louise Stewart, of this city; and Mrs. Mabel Almendinger, of Ft. Madison, Iowa.  Another daughter, the late Mrs. Julia Janes, died here seventeen years ago.

ADONILIA VIGIL

Adonilia Vigil, 79, died July 9, 2001 at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.

She was born on May 10, 1922, in Questa, New Mexico to Ignacio and Pedada [Brito] Gonzales.

She married Porfirio Vigil in New Mexico and together they moved to Colorado in 1944 where her husband worked in the Smelter and various mines in the area.

She loved baking and sewing handmade blankets.  She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Leadville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1976; parents; daughter Maryanne and sons Jimmy and James, who died as infants; and four brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son Juan [Dorothy] Mandonaado, Leadville; daughters Betty [Neil] Pacheco; Eveelyn [Gary] Jaramillo; and Geraldine [Daniel Gurule] Rivera. all of Leadville; grandchildren Lisa Espinal, Elizabeth Rivera, Valentin and Miguel Martinez, Porfidia Beuke, Gerald Mandonado, Valerier Gonzales and Kenneth Pacheco; great grandchildren Matthew, ??Charlene, Peter, Nicholas and Julio Rivera, Angelina and Destiny Martinez, Shaya and George Espinal, Justin and Derrick Pacheco, Nicole and Michael Mandonado and Amanda and Brandi Gonzales.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services were held July 13, 2001 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Leadville. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery next to her husband.   A reception was held at La Cantina following the interment.

Pallbearers were gerald Mandonado, Valentin and Miguel Martinez, Kenny Pacheco, Eloy Gonzales and Daniel Gurule.  Honorary pallbearers were Alfedio Gurule and Manuel Martinez.

WALLACE - Saturday, April 10, [1920] at 810 East Seventh street, Albert Wallace, age 77 years.

Funeral announced later.

WHEAT - Monday,  May 31, [1920] at Eldora, Colorado, Mrs. W. G. Wheat.
The remains will be sent to Leadville for burial and the funeral, being arranged for by the Moynahan-O'Malia company will be announced later.  William H. Barbie, son of the deceased will accompany the body to Leadville.

Wolohan, Julia

Julia Wolohan - Leadville Carbonate Chronicle - December 6, 1915 - From
Sunday's Daily - Mrs. Julia Wolohan - Mrs. Julia Wolohan, formerly a well
known resident here, died in Pueblo yesterday, according to word received by
relatives and friends here.  She was 60 years old.  Her death followed a
sickness of a number of days which was increased by her advanced age.  Mrs.
Wolohan had lived in Pueblo four years.  She came to Leadville with her
husband in 1880, and was a resident of the city until her removal to Pueblo.
Mr. Wolohan died a number of years ago.  The Rev. T. J. Wolohan, of the
Sacred Heart parish at Pueblo, who spent his boyhood in Leadville, is a son
of Mrs. Wolohan, and she is also survived by one daughter, Jennie Wolohan,
of the same city.  Mrs. Matthew McDonald, of 601 East Sixth street, this
city, is a sister.  The remains of the pioneer woman will be brot to
Leadville for burial tonight, and will be taken to the home of her sister,
Mrs. McDonald.  Funeral services will be announced later.  Leadville
Carbonate Chronicle - December 13, 1915 - Mrs. Julia Wolohan - The Rev.
Father T. J. Wolohan, of the Sacred Heart parish, Pueblo, who as a boy lived
in Leadville, was one of the priests assisting yesterday morning at the
funeral of his mother, the late Mrs. J. Wolohan, who died Saturday in Pueblo
where she had lived the last four years after leaving Leadville with her
family.  Father Wolohan officiated with the Rev. Fathers W. J. O'Malley and
John Judnic in celebrating the solemn requiem high mass at the Church of the
Annunciation and took part in the services at the grave in St. Joseph's
cemetery.  During the services he controlled himself firmly till the
ceremonies at the grave were nearly ended, but then broke down with grief.
At the Church of the Annunciation the services were largely attended, there
being many former friends of the Wolohans in the city who tendered their
respects in this manner.  Many of them also called at the home of Mrs.
Matthew McDonald, 601 East Sixth street, a sister of Mrs. Wolohan, at 9:30
before the cortege passed to the church at ten.  "Face to Face" and "Nearer,
My God, To Thee" were the beautiful hymns sung by the Annunciation choir as
part of the church services.  The pallbearers were Andy Kehoe, J. H. Whalen,
J. E. Mulagan (?), T. F. Wall, Ed Dollard, Sr., and Tom Doyle.  A number of
members of the Catholic Knights and Ladies of America, to which Mrs. Wolohan
belonged, were in the congregation both at the church and house.  Several
friends from Salida were also in attendance.

ROSEMARY LOUISE ZELEZNIKAR

Rosemary Louise [Baird] Zeleznikar, 65, died June 22, 2001 at her home in Golden.

She was born July 30, 1935 in Denver.

She was in law enforcement at the Jefferson County Sheriff's department.

She married Frank E. Zeleznikar on December 29, 1972.

She loved her family, friends, gardening and working on computers and belonged to an ALS support group.

She is survived by her husband in Golden; son Douglas E. Seidel, Gunnison; daughters Crystal V. Balltrip, Greeley; and Barbara D. McGeehan, Longmont.

She is also survived by four step children; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services will be on June 29, 2001.

Cheryl Lynn Zugel

Cheryl Lynn Zugel, 43, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 in Tucson, Ariz.
She was born in Leadville on Dec. 19, 1958, to Joseph and Anna Koucherik Blamey.
She went to school in Leadville graduating from Lake County High School.
On Dec. 23, 1982, she married George Zugel at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. While George worked for ASARCO, she worked at various jobs in Leadville. But she always considered her most important job to be that of mother and homemaker.
She loved to embroider, finding it relaxing and challenging. She also enjoyed reading and was a devoted computer buff. Animals were another of her loves. Along with her family and friends, her dogs Conan and Cinnamon will miss her very much.
She was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Leadville.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Blamey and her great grandmother Anna Koucherik.
She is survived by her husband George Zugel, Vail, Ariz.; son Michael Zugel, Vail, Ariz.; mother Anne Blamey, Leadville; sisters JoAnn (Ken Harris) Mehle, Petaluma, Calif.; and Rosemary (Walt) Martinez, Brighton, Colo.; brother Joseph Blamey, Leadville; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The Rosary was recited on Jan. 10 and Mass of Christian Burial on Jan. 11, both at Annunciation Catholic Church. Father Tom Killeen officiated and Joan Dawson sang accompanied by Jean Elliott.
Interment was in the Elk's Rest Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Taylor, Scott Blamey, Charlie Brink, William Dominguez, Ed Holte and Sal Mercado.
Following the interment, the Leadville Eagle's Lodge hosted a reception for family and friends.
