"TOM WATTERS, 71, DIES.
The Colorado-Kansas Businessman Was Widely Known.
Goodland, Kansas, Jan. 6
Tom Watters, one of the better known Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas hotel men, stockmen and ranchers, died in Goodland early this morning following a lingering illness and a major operation. Watters came to Goodland from Flagler, Colo., some thirty years ago and purchased what is now known as the Watters hotel, building it into one of the most popular Western Kansas hotels. He sold his holdings about three years ago and has since devoted his entire attention to the development of his ranch on the Smoky south of Goodland. The Watters ranch is one of the show places of Western Kansas, dotted with hundreds of trees along the Smoky and planted to hundreds of acres of alfalfa mostly under irrigation. An extensive wheat farmer and stockman, he had thrived during recent years and was one of the most substantial businessmen in this end of the state. He was an enthusiastic booster for Western Kansas and had taken an active part in the development of this section for the last half century. Watters was never married and is survived by one sister, Dr. Nellie Watters, a brother and ten nieces and nephews. Had he lived until March, he would have celebrated his seventy-second birthday anniversary. "
