October 1910 "The following is the first prize essay written by
Fred H. Joels, district number 10, school E,
Mrs. Ida M. Casady, teacher. The subject is "Kit Carson County
Colorado," and was in response to prizes offered to the scholars of
this county by J.E. Bruze of Burlington. The county commissioners
acting as judges.
Kit Carson County is situated in the eastern part of the state of
Colorado. Its eastern limit is a portion of the boundary line
between Colorado and Kansas. Its northern boundary lies slightly
north of the thirty ninth parallel. Kit Carson County was settled a
number of years ago by people mostly from the eastern states,
that came here for the purpose of farming. A great number of them
had no knowledge whatever of farming and what farmers did
settle here were principally from the states east of the
Mississippi. They did not understand the cultivation of prairie
soil well enough to make a success of farming.
The climate was not like that of eastern states. They soon
became discouraged and returned to the east,
leaving the soil in the same condition that they found it with
the exception of a few acres plowed. The county was from that
time until nearly three years ago pastured wholly for grazing
purposes. During this period experimenting stations were
experimenting upon methods of cultivating and handling the
prairie soil. In 1906 people again began to settle in this
county. They came for the purpose of making themselves home and
to depend upon the cultivation of the soil for a living.
They were mostly farmers from the states west of the
Mississippi. They understood the dry farmers methods of the
west and how to handle and successfully cultivate the
prairie soil. During the past three years the population of
Kit Carson County has grown to be more than twenty times
what it was in 1905. The farmers were paid for their efforts
with abundant crops. The rainfall has increased.
The towns have grown rapidly, making fine markets for farm
produce.
The Rock Island railway runs through the central part of the county.
This gives the county great shipping advantages. The people all have
fine houses. The soil is among the richest in the United States.
The school system is unsurpassed. We have a most beautiful,
healthful and delightful climate while the gorgeous sunsets ....
..clouds the broad prairies. The wonderful expanse of heavens blue
have an influence upon the character of man and by their power bring
him to a nearness to God."
