Father: Orthy Chester Gossett

At 1:30 am on Saturday, July 20, 2019, Eldon Gossett passed away, after a heroic battle with lung cancer.
Eldon was born in Tacoma, Washington to Orthy C. Gossett and Iris Dieu. The family subsequently moved to Kansas, where Eldon grew up a farm boy.
Prior to his move to Brookings in the late 1970’s, Eldon served in the Korean War. His career began in the Aerospace industry, where he worked at Boeing Lockheed and American Airlines. During those years, Eldon traveled extensively, and even worked for a time as an accident investigator for an insurance company.
In late 1969, Eldon relocated to Brookings. Along the way, he acquired the Central Building on Chetco Ave., the onetime headquarters for Brookings Land and Townsite Co. He restored the building, initially with the idea of opening an art gallery. He gave it a try, and also created “The Treasure Trove” in the front office of the building, which was a gift shop. Eldon noted that at that time, there wasn’t much interest in art acquisition.
This began Eldon’s long career in Real Estate. He started Coldwell Banker Oregon Coast Realty, which later became Oregon Coast Realty.
At one time, there were so many Brokers on the floor, that Eldon and his late wife, Barbara moved the admin office downstairs to the bottom floor. Many past and current brokers got their start, either in Eldon’s office, or through his classes, which he taught regularly on the principles and practices of Real Estate. Eldon also hosted the television program, “Real Estate 101” on our local TV station, Channel 9.
Eldon was instrumental in the planning and creation of our Current Chetco Activity Center. At one point, he assisted the City of Brookings with sewer plant issues and repairs. He was larger than life, and a real presence in our community.
Many local residents who were suffering economically were quietly given loans by Eldon.
Eldon met and became fast friends with many of the “Old Timers” and founding families in our community. And acquired a vast wealth or local history, and humorous anecdotes. He also obtained many historical objects, implements, and artifacts which are still housed in the museum downstairs in the Central Building.
In recent years, Eldon and Rosalie, his partner for the last twelve years enjoyed getaways to their cabin in Selma, Oregon. Which also made medical visits more convenient, as his health became fragile.
Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, step parents, his brother Elwyn and his wife Barbara.
In addition to Rosalie Beals, Eldon is survived by his children; Rhonda Brosius (Tom), and Greg Gossett (Terri). He is also survived by his sisters; Janice, Evelyn Davis, and Eloise Keeper.
Eldon leaves behind his grandchildren; Stephen Brosius, Ashlee Wire, Jennifer Boyer, Luke, Jeremy, Logan and Holly Gossett and 6 great-grandchildren.
At his request, services will not be held.
