Newton John Rice was born May 8, 1884 in Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa to Homer E. Rice and Minnie E. Hatch.

In 1900 Thurston County, Nebraska, Homer is 44, born in Iowa, Minnie 36 in Vermont, Newton May 1884, Delmar 9, Gerald 8, and Donald 2.

Newton claimed a quarter in section 33, 8S 51W in 1911.

Newton John Rice, 25, married Nettie Kivett in Hugo, Colorado on July 3, 1909.

In 1920 Newton J. and Nettie A., both 25 and teachers, are in Granada, Prowers Colorado.
Nettie was born in Missouri, her parents in Illinois.

April 1912 Burlington "Edna Kivett of Norton, Kansas, is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Prof. N. J. Rice, this week."
Edna was teaching at the Flagler school 1913-1914.
In 1917 Ordway, Colorado "Misses Frances and Jewel Strever were the guests of Miss Edna Kivett, at the Aaron Ulrich home, Sunday."

September 6, 1918 Routt County, Colorado "The many friends of Fred Walrrod Altman and Miss Edna Mae Kivett were much surprised when they llearned on Saturday that the two popular young people had been married for two weeks. The wedding took place at Craig August 17, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Horace Mann of the Congregational church.
The groom is one of the most prominent young ranchmen of the Mystlc neighborhood, where he has resided for the past four years. His bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Kivett of Norton, Kansas, who are now at Canon City, where they will remain for the winter. Mrs. Altman taught school at Milner last year, and is now in charge of the Mystic school, which is located on the Altman ranoh. Mr. and Mrs. Altman have the best wishes of a host of friends."

December 1920 "Mrs. Fred Altman, who was called to Canon City several weeks ago by the death of her father, returned home last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Altman departed Monday for their new home in Idaho "

In 1912 N. J. Rice is principal of the Burlington schools.



In 1917 Principal N. J. Rice had letters unclaimed at the Loveland, Colorado post office.

Nettie Alice Kivett Rice 1881-1917, dying in Burlington, is buried in Norton # 49992620.

In 1919 at a Craig, Colorado school board meeting "Dr. N. J. Rice, of the State University, and J. L. Mickey, superintendent of the local schools, were present and each gave a short talk, and were also able to give valuable advice and information concerning the various subjects under discussion. Dr. Rice seemed enthusiastic over the standing and conditions in the Craig High School and gave assurance that, such standing being maintained, the school would be placed on the accredited list at the expiration of the two years required by the regulations. "

Newton is widowed in 1920 Denver, teaching and living at the YMCA School, in a boarding house.

Newton J. Rice married Nellie M. Thompson on February 17, 1920 in Denver.

Nellie was teaching in Denver in 1910, 23, the adopted daughter of Wm. H. Brown 71 and Susan M. Brown 5o6.

Nellie was in Denver in 1920, 32, born in Colorado, the adopted daughter of Susan M. Brown 66 born in Pennsylvania, widowed.

1923 Brush, Colorado "Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rice and son, Donald, of Pierce, Nebraska, stopped off between trains for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Malchow. Mr. Rice left on the midnight train, returning to Nebraska. while Donald went on to Brighton for a visit with his brother, N. J. Rice."

July 22, 1926 "Professor N. J. Rice, experienced educator, has accepted the position of principal at the Intermountain Institure vacated by John Gehlmann, who resigned to accept a position at Oak Park high school, Chicago..."

In 1930 Newton is principal of a school in Weiser, Idaho, 45, with Nellie M. 43, Donald 8, and Arthur 4. Nellie's mother Susan M. Brown 77 is with them.

In 1948 N. J. is chairman of the Idaho Textbook Commission.

Nellie May Rice 1887-1942 is buried in Weiser, # 27697551, with Newton John Rice 1884-1961 # 27697534.

Newton John Rice, 60, married Anna Jean Shearer on October 21, 1943 in Payette County, Idaho.

Annie Jean Shearer Rice 1900-1981 is also buried in Weiser # 27697512.
