In 1870 Decatur County, Indiana, John "Grissel" is a carpenter, 35, Mary E. 30, Hiram G. 13, Erasmus D. 10, Emma A. 8, Elmer E. 4, and Mary E. 1.
1878 Calhoun County, Iowa "H. J. GRISWOLD is about to add to the size of his house.

Wedding cake--We omitted to acknowledge last week the receipt of some very choice wedding cake, from Mrs. H. J. GRISWOLD, on the occasion of the marriage of her sister. Thanks.

Julia Irons was in Woodford County, Illinois in 1870, with William Irons 48, born in Maryland, farming, Mary 37 born in Virginia. Mary is 16, Lucy 15, Sarah 13, Minnie 11, Julia 10k, and Lenesa 8.
They're in Phelps County, Nebraska in 1880, William 56, Mary 46, Julia 20, Tersa V. 18, William A. 10, and Charles H. 6.

William 1822-1907 is buried in Harlan County, Nebraska, # 63993935, with Mary Elizabeth (Cauley) Irons 1833-1911 # 63994069.

In the same cemetery in Harlan County, John Griswold 1834-1909 # 74612050, with Mary Elizabeth (Slowan( Griswold 1839-1922.

Julia's brother William A. Irons 1870-1962 is buried in McCook, Nebraska # 130714374, with Ida Mae Irons 1883-1955.


Erasmus Darwin Griswold of Indiana and Julia Irons of Illinois married in 1881..

One tree said Erasmus and Julia Winnie Irons were married in Phelps County, Nebraska oin 1882.

Erasmus claimed a quarter in section 23, 8S 45W, Kit Carson County, in 1891.

1890's Jolley (Iowa) Times "Mr. Griswold, of Nebraska, visited this week with his brother in law, L. B. Irons. Mr. Griswold had not seen Lucian for twenty years and they enjoyed a very pleasant visit."

In 1900 Calhoun County, Iowa, there's an Erasmus D. Griswold farming, born Nov 1860 in Indiana, marrie d18 years to Julia April 1860 Illnois. Jesse E. Dec 1883 in Nebraska, Flossie M. April 1888 in Colorado, Roy July 1891, Minnie A. March 1893, Fay E. April 1894, John Sept 1895, and Velva J. Dec 1898 were born in Nebraska.

In 1910 Calhoun County, E.D. is farming, 49, Julia 50, Roy L. 19, Fay E. 16, John W. 14, E. Nelva 11, Lucia L. 8, and Ina M. 6.

Erastmus (which is what the tombstone says) 1860-1911 is buried in Calhoun County # 23550593.
"Survivors include Julia Irons his wife; Children include Mrs. Faye Durlam, Mrs. Anson Johnson, Mrs. James Hoskens, Mrs. Clarence Wischoff, Mrs. Dolph Payton, Velva & Ira, J.E. John, Ray and Lucian."

Julia Willie (Irons) Griswold 1860-1946 is buried in Calhoun County # 46525808.

"Contributed by Wendell Durlam, Julia's grandson (his mother was Fay Griswold Durlam) Julia (Irons) and Eratsmus Griswold had a family of 11 children 7 girls and 4 boys. Not sure about ages except Fay was next to youngest of the girls.
The Girls were: Pearl, Floss, Minnie, Ina, Velva, Elsie and Fay. The boys were: Roy, Lucian, Jesse, and John.

Minnie used to come to help Mom (Fay) when Mom had a baby (which was quite often) And Minnie used to bake homemade bread for us and we loved that. Grandma Julia, in her later years' used to stay with each one of her daughters for 2 or 3 months at a time so I got to know her pretty well. She used to quilt while at each place. She read the Bible a lot and she was very hard of hearing. We would have to shout into her ear to make her hear us. She had a hearing-aid but it was worthless. She is buried in the Jolley cemetery with her husband and other family members."
ELSIE

Elsie M. (Griswold) Johnson 1882-1965 is buried in Calhoun County # 46667238, with Anson Johnson 1878-1951.

FLOSSIE

Flossie M. (Griswold) Peyton 1888-1982 is buried in Sac City, Iowa # 183993707, with William R. Peyton 1881-1976.

ROY

Roy Leslie Griswold, 25, born at Wilcox, Nebraska, married Amanda Monk, 24, born at Fairmount, Minnesota, to John Monk and Caroline Kloca, on October 12, 1915 in Sac County, Iowa.

In 1920 they're farming in Pocahontas County, Iowa, Roy 28, Amanada 27, and Verlen 3 born in Iowa.

Roy 1891-1922 died and buried in Calhoun County # 23680063.

Amanda Harris 1892-1986 is buried in Calhoun County # 142609353.
"Manda H. Harris, daughter of John and Caroline Klocko Monk, was born Aug. 22, 1895 at Fairmont, MN. She died Jan. 3, 1986 at Sunny Knoll Care Centre in Rockwell City at the age of 90 years.
She received her education in the Fairmont area. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Jolley. In 1915, she was united in marriage with Roy Griswold and they made their home in Jolley. Mr. Griswold died in 1922. She later married Don Harris in 1933 and they lived in Jolley and in Rockwell City. She served as the postmistress in Jolley for 21 years, and later as the director of the Calhoun County Board of Selective Service for 12 years. In February of 1985 she entered the Shady Oaks Nursing Home, Lake City, and then moved to Sunny Knoll.
Preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Verlene Griswold Brian in 1973; her husband, Don Harris in 1950; and one sister. She is survived by three grandchildren, William Brian of Rockwell City, Richard Brian of Los Angeles, CA and Judy (Mrs. Alan) Sill of Duluth, MN; one step-daughter, Virginia (Mrs. Don) Knisley of Jefferson; and five great-grandchildren."

MINNIE

Minnie, 16, married Clarence Henry Wisthoff on March 13, 1909 in Calhoun County, Iowa.

Minnie Alice (Griswold) Wisthoff 1893-1980 died in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and is buried in Calhoun County # 39542987, with Clarence Henry Wisthoff 886-1964.


FAY

Fay Ellen (Griswold) Durlam, 1894-1979 is buried in Greene County, Iowa # 72949379.

"Fay Ell Durlam, daughter of Erastmus and Julia Irons Griswold, was born April 2, 1894, at Wilcox, NE and died June 5, 1979 at her home in Jefferson at the age of 85 years, two months and three days.
At the age of two, Fay moved with her family to Jolley where she attended country school. On January 2, 1912, she was married to Michael Durlam at Sac City. They made their home in Jolley for several years. They they moved to Pomeroy for a short time and then to Knoke. In 1918, the family moved to Jefferson where they lived in the same house for 56 years. In November, 1978, Fay and Mike moved to Greenewood Homes where they lived at the time of Fay's death.
Fay was honored as "Mother of the Year" in 1977. She and Mike were parents of ten children, Loran, Gerald, Vernon, Eugene, Wendell, Wayne, Lois, Paullina, Mary, and Mike Jr.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Vernon and Wayne"

JOHN

John William Griswold, 24, married Hazel Fern Conley on Sept 25, 1920 in Cahoun County.

John 44, and Hazel 41 are farming in Calhoun County in 1940, with Wilma Joyce 13.

He died on January 11, 1977 in Manatee County, Florida.

Hazel Griswold, born July 1, 1898, died in September 1979, last residence Calhoun County.

Wilma Joyce Griswold and Donald Dewayne Bevis had Nancy Sue Bevis in Hennepin COunty, Minnesota on July 29, 1957.

They had Bruce Kent Bevis on Dec 29, 1955 in Hennepin County.

VELVA

In 1920 Greene County, Iowa, Edward L. Grimes is 27, with Velva 20 and Margaret 2.

They're in Ames, Iowa in 1925, with Margaret J. 6, Frances L. 4, and Dorwin J. 3.

In 1940 Ames, Iowa, Edward is 50, Velva J. 41, Frank L. 20 a clothing store clerk, Darwin J. 19, Betty J. 14, and Bernice J. 6.

Velva Julia (Griswold) Grimes 1898-1992 is buried in Mesa, Arizona # 56031946, with Edward Leo Grimes 1889-1970.
Their son Dorwin James Grimes 1921-1954 is buried in Long Beach, California # 177603636. "Survived by his wife, Margaret P,; a son; his parents, Edward L Grimes & Velva J Griswold Grimes of Mesa, AZ; brother, Frank L.; sisters, Bernice & Kay Ann Grimes and Mrs. Margaret Klingseis & Mrs. Betty Jane Dixon"

Margaret J. Klingseis, born April 10, 1918, died Dec 29, 2006.

Francis Grimes, born March 17, 1920 in Iowa, died May 12, 1979 in Sanata Clara County.

Betty Jane Dixon, born Nov 15, 1925 in Ames, Iowa, died June 24, 2006.

LUCIAN

Lucian was born in April 1901.

In 1920 Calhoun County, Lucian, farming, and Lila L., both 18, have a son Clair S. three months old.

Lucian is buried in Calhoun County 1901-1982 # 39540391, with Lila Luella (Smith) Griswold 1901-1998.
Clair 1919-1998 and Lucille 1917-1997 are also buried in the Jolley cemetery.

"Zane Grey Griswold, 89, of Duncombe, IA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Zane will be cremated and a private burial for Zane and Darlyne will be held at the Washington Township Cemetery in Duncombe, IA. Arrangements have been entrusted with Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Zane was born near Jolley, IA on March 24, 1924 to Lucian and Lila (Smith) Griswold. He attended school in Jolley and Lytton and then graduated from Jolley High School in 1941. After graduation he worked for the Jolley Lumber Yard until joining the US Navy serving from 1943-1946 in South America. After being discharged from the Navy he attended Iowa State University and then began working for Horn Brothers traveling to install retractable bleachers and folding doors. During that time he married Darlyne Kusterer on April 29, 1949 in Dallas, TX. They continued traveling together until starting their family where they made their home in Duncombe, IA. Zane then worked for various contractors in Fort Dodge. He enjoyed helping family with various projects, hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and reading westerns. He also loved going for coffee uptown.
Zane is survived by his children Ronda (Jim) Beck of Fort Dodge, Linda Goodpaster and Scott (Cathi) Griswold both of Duncombe, IA; grandchildren Jeff Beck of rural Des Moines, IA, Kristin (Josh) Greenfield of Roland, IA, Dan Goodpaster of Webster City, IA and Nathan, Nicholas and Noah Griswold all of Duncombe, IA; 10 great-grandchildren; his nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlyne; his parents; his brother Clair Griswold and sister Glatha Griswold."

"GLATHA ZOE GRISWOLD, 87, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa. MEMORIAL SERVICES were held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City, Iowa. Burial was in the CROWN HILL CEMETERY, Jolley, Calhoun County, Iowa . "

INA MARIE

She married Emmett Kelley on 31 May 1919 in Sac City, Iowa. They were the parents of Firman, Vincent, Dale, and Jack.

Ina (Griswold) Kelley, 1902-1970, dying in Sacramento, California, is buried in Calhoun County Iowa # 116674668, with Emmett Crawford Kelley 1901-19666.
