Marriages: Hamlin, Lizzie E., to
Tufford, Albert H. on 31 Jan 1891 in Denver.
Another Will Tufford:
June 1902 "Will Tufford,
who back in the eighties was local editor of the
Ouraj Muldoon, contributes a little Fourth of July
skit to the Telluride Journal today.
'Little Muldoon' is now city editor of the Clinton,
Iowa, Daily Age, but still has a soft spot for
the San Juan."
July 1928 Montrose, Colorado "The Daily Press
news editor had a delightful visit from Wil V.
Tufford of Clinton, Iowa, Monday morning. Mr. Tufford
was in western Colorado as early as 1879.
Wil Tufford's baptismal name is William Vincent.
A printer one time published the name as "Wil."
W. V. adopted “Wil" and "Wil” he haa been ever
since. Remember that.
He came to Saguache in 1879 where an uncle
lived, entered his employ driving a freight team in
his uncle's train on the Leadville road and into
the Gunnison country, he hauling the first silver
ore out of the Elk mountains to Alamosa.
This was the nearest point on the railroad, a
distance of 140 miles from the top of the range,
down thru the Gunnison country over the Cochetopa
range and down the San Luis valley, 65 miles to
the end of the railroad. Giving his job to a
friend from the east, he entered the employ of
the old Barlow & Sanderson Stage company as
bookkeeper at Saguache, leaving them to go with
Co. F. First Colorado national guard at the time
of the Meeker massacre and White River Ute
uprising. In 1879, John C. Bell was commander
of the Lake City company at that time.
Tufford remained with the company three years.
When not on duty he worked in the Chronicle
office at Saguache. Soon he became first
foreman of the Gunnison News, then manager of
the Gunnison Democrat, which he helped to
establish, leaving that to go to Ouray on the
Solid Muldoon, the mining camp and humorous
paper of frontier days. He was secretary of
the company owning it. Here he acquired his
western name of 'Little Muldoon.'
He remained in charge of the Solid Muldoon
until the winter of 1882,
when he went back to Morrison, I11.,
on a visit and thence to the Adviser at
Clinton, Iowa, to help over the holidays.
Presently he took charge of the
Clinton Herald as foreman. He haa had
several different positions since,
later incorporating the Iowa Printing
company, of which he has been president
and general manager since..
He served Iowa Odd Fellows 13 years as
an officer of the grand lodge and in
1904 and 1905 was grand master of Iowa.
Mr. Tufford can recall many
interesting events in western Colorado, especially
during his association with Dave Day on the Muldoon."
