"Samuel H. Lamborn, widely known and highly respected resident of Griswold and vicinity for upwards of forty years, passed peacefully away Sunday evening, October 9, at the ripe age of 83 years.
Mr. Lamborn was born in Venango county, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1838. With his parents, brothers and sisters he came to Iowa in 1854. At this time no railroads extended farther west than Chicago and the family came by steamboat down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to Jackson county. The timbered areas along the River were attractive to settlers. Here was transportation, building material and fuel, and in this rapidly growing community of pioneers the family made a home. In 1861 he was married to Ellen Shaffer, whose family had recently come to the West from Ohio. Of the children born to them, seven survive: Mrs. Sarah J. Hodge of Salt Lake City, Utah; Millard, Herschel, Sask.; Charles, Chicago; Perry, Garden City, Kansas; Jessie (Mrs. W. C. Bryant), Jennie (Mrs. A. B. Christian), both of Griswod; Walter of Denison, Iowa.
The family resided in Jackson county until 1880 when they removed to Kansas and, after a few months, to Cass county. Mr. Lamborn purchased a farm south of Griswold, where he lived until 1897, when he left the farm to the care of the boys and came to live in Griswold. Here the beloved wife and mother passed away in 1908. For some years he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Bryant.
Mr. Lamborn was a man of active mind, positive convictions and strong character; took great interest in politics and public affairs and served his community in various public offices. He had an extensive acquaintance in this part of Iowa and many friends. In the organization of the Union church of Griswold in 1910 he took a hearty and active interest and his name appears on the list of organizers and charter members. He continued a zealous worker and supported in this liberal church movement.
Mr. Lamborn was the youngest, and last survivor, of a family of ten brothers [note: ten siblings total, but not all brothers]. All of his children, except one, came to attend his funeral; also nephews, Samuel H. Lamborn and Alex Reed from Bellevue, Iowa.
Funeral services were conducted by his friend and former pastor, the Rev. George T. Ashley, now residing at Wichita, Kansas. The Masonic lodge of Griswold, of which he was an honored member, conducted the burial service.
