"Our people were shocked on Tuesday morning when the word was passed around that Engineer John A Mason had died the night before. But few of our people knew he had been dangerously ill, in fact it was only two or three days before that he had been taken down with pneumonia fever. He had been in robust health all winter, in fact on Thursday of last week he had started out with his engine on the Afton local and got as far as Scammon when he felt so ill that another engineer was called and he came home and took to his bed.
His sudden death was a terrible shock to his wife and two children. Mr. Mason has lived here since he was a very young man, where he married and where his children were born. He was identified with the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge, the Odd Fellows, Eastern Star and Rebekah lodges and was a member of the Commandery at Pittsburg. His brothers of the latter lodge came over in full uniform to act as an escort to his body at the funeral. Notwithstanding the slush and snow the Methodist church was crowded to the galleries with his neighbors and friends to pay their respects to his memory. He was forty years, two months and twenty-one days old.
He was born in Hancock County, Ill., Dec. 14, 1871. When quite young he came to Rice County, Kansas with his parents. Later they moved to Norton County. He came to Cherokee in 1892 and has lived here since. He was married in 1894 to Laura Frances Lynn. To this union two children were born, both of whom with his wife survive him. Six sisters and three brothers also survive. His father and mother recently died. Five sisters and two brothers were at the funeral services, also Mr. J.N. Lynn, a brother of Mrs. Mason's and two cousins from Cherryvale.
For eleven years he has been a trusted employee of the Frisco and practically gave his life for the company. He was well liked by his brother trainmen, and all the company, so much so that the officers tied up all local trains during the hour of his funeral, so that the employees could attend. His pastor, Rev. Harmon Allen, preached from the text found in Isaiah 32-2. Funeral services were under the auspices of the Masons. Many beautiful floral emblems attested to the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors.
We neglected to state that he was also a member of the Elk Lodge, Royal Arch Masons and the Methodist Brotherhood.
