Hartford, Kansas, June 4, 1891 " Not for the last time within the last
year do we chronicle the sudden death of one of Hartford's most worthy
citizens. On last Saturday, Memorial day at about 5 o'clock,
Father Adam Wenger, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens
of Hartford, died very suddenly of heart failure. He had been sitting
on the porch, and had told his wife that he would go in and lie down
while she prepared supper, as he felt hungry. In a very short time,
not more than two or three minutes, his daughter, Lilly
followed him in and made the startling discovery that he was dead.
Dr. Reser was immediately summoned, but life was entirely extinct.
Adam Wenger was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, in March 1818,
and was, therefore, 73 years. 2 months and one day of age. He
was first married to Anna Diller while yet a young man, by which union
lie became the father of five sons, two of whom survive him.
Mrs. Anna Wenger died at her home in Bearville, Pa., on
August 13, 1855. He married Mary Russell on May 8, 1872. and leaves
one daughter as the fruit of this union. He removed from Pennsylvania
to Cass county. Illinois, and after living there for a few years,
came to Kansas in August 1871, settling in Hartford, where he has
resided ever since. He joined the Evangelical church about 35 years
ago and ever afterward led an upright and religious life.
He expressed himself only a few days before his death as being ready
to meet his Master at any time and that he could die in peace.
The doctor had informed the family that be was liable to die
suddenly and when the news was gently told to him, he said that
he was ready.
The funeral services were held in the Christian church.
Rev. C. F. Erflmire, of Atchison, Kansas, preaching an eloquent
funeral sermon. After the services at the church,
the remains were followed by a long procession of friends to
Hartford cemetery, where Rev. P. A. Scbuman, of Emporia,
conducted the ceremony of the sad rites of interment.
Mrs. Susie Wenger, of Emporia, wife of the late Lemuel Wenger, who proceeded his father in death just
one month, was present at the funeral. Father Wenger was a devoted
husband and a loving father. He leaves a wife and daughter and two sons
to mourn his loss. We join with the hosts of friends in extending sincere
sympathy to the bereaved family."
