Joseph Jackson Bowen was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, August 9, 1833; died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Lee, near Plato, Texas county, Missouri, April 27, 1922; aged 88 years, 8 months, 18 days. He was married to Margaret Johnson October 26, 1859. To this union were born ten children, four boys and six girls. Four of the girls and his wife have preceded him to the better world. Mrs. Bowen died January 22, 1890. Two daughters, Margaret Jane and Margaret Samantha, died in infancy; two, Mary Angelina Fulks and and Nancy Aphia Bowen, in the bloom of womanhood. The other children are William E. Bowen, Hagerman, New Mexico; John J. Bowen, Bisbee, Arizona; Lotta Belle Wilson, Helix, Oregon; Leonard L. Bowen, Lynchburg, Mo.; George S. Bowen and Lucinda Lee, of Plato. The last three were with him during his last illness. He came to Missouri in 1859 and settled at Roby. Both he and his wife united with the Christian church shortly after and were faithful workers for Christ. After his wife's death he was married to Mrs. Lydia Carter, who also passed to the great beyond several years ago. He spent the last ten years at the home of his daughter, where he died. Was in poor health for a number of years. All that tender, loving hands could do was done to relieve his suffering, which was terrible the last two weeks of life. But the end came peacefully at 7:30 Thursday morning at the above date. |
