After graduation, he was drafted and took a Army physical and was rejected due to a heart problem. This did not stop him, along with friends and family he tried several time to join the Army without any luck. He went went to Portland, or and was hired by Kaiser to work on Liberty ships as a welder. A skill that stayed with him for his lifetime.
With a little trickery with his brother Homer, he was able to join the Merchant Marines. At that time of war, Merchant Marines were part of the United States Coast. Also joining with him was his best friend, Vern Thompson. After basic training at Catalina Island. They ventured on 2 ocean voyages. Reverend Homer Rich, 90, of McKinney, a remarkable husband, father, grandfather and man of God, was gracefully lifted into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, March 30, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Reverend Rich began life on November 14, 1926 at his parents' rural home in Stratton, Colorado. A Dr. Homer arrived by horse and buggy and delivered him to become a sibling in a large family to four sisters and four brothers.
As he became a young man, Reverend Rich joined the United States Army on March 14, 1946, to join the fight to preserve the freedom of his country, however, the war ended soon after and he was honorably discharged on April 4, 1947. While he was stationed at a local base, he attended North Little Rock Assembly of God and was saved while attending the church. He felt a strong call to become a minister and used his GI Bill to enroll in Bible College at the Southwestern Assembly of God College in Waxahachie, Texas. While there, he met the love of his life, Tommie Sue Marcum, of Ft. Worth, Texas. Eager to begin his future path in life, on Friday, June 2, 1950, he and his wife both graduated from college. On Saturday, June 3, 1950, he married his Tommie Sue, and on the morning of Sunday, June 4, 1950, he rose early and taught his Sunday school class.
Continuing their mission in life of service and devotion to the church, they were associate pastors for Re. Wilkerson at Riverside Assembly of God Church in Ft. Worth, Lawton, Oklahoma. He was senior pastor in Justin, Alvord, Lake Worth, Big Spring, Dallas, and Whitesboro, Texas. Later, in 2008, Reverend Rich was instrumental in helping to establish Heritage Assembly of God Church in McKinney, Texas.
Reverend Rich had a passion for supporting missions, was a prayer warrior throughout his life, and went on several mission trips himself. He possessed a “true pastor's heart” feeling it was his calling to take the word of Christ to all to offer its redemption, as he so fervently believed.
Another true passion he felt in life was for his role as a devoted husband and father. A kind and gentle man, the example he set as a deeply spiritual and loving husband and father, and possessing impeccable character is hard to surpass. Left with the indelible memories of his fostering care are his wife of 66 years, Sue Rich, and three children, Sam and Janee Rich of Arlington, TX, Debbie and Dan Swanson of Forney, TX, and Michael Rich of McKinney, TX. Grandchildren, Mark Rich and wife, Dr. Joanna Rich, Susanne Langwell and husband, Josh, David Flanagan, II and wife, Melissa, Leslee Garcia and husband, John, and Kelly Grubbs and husband, John; Great Grandchildren, Charlotte, Avery, Sydney, Parker, Emma, Will, Addison, and Allie. Reverend Rich is also survived by one brother, Walt Rich, 94, of Flager, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 5, 2017 followed by the funeral service at 10:30 A.M. at Heritage Assembly of God Church located at 4045 Eldorado Parkway, McKinney, Texas 75070. A Committal service with Army Honor will be held at 2:15 P.M. at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
