"My great aunt Charle’n lived a colorful and fantastical life. She traveled the world in the 40s and 50s as an exotic fan dancer with her pet monkey, Paris. Her home was a magical place to me when I was a kid. It was filled with tchotchkes, newspaper clippings, and photos from her travels: there she was dancing with pygmies in Africa, headlining a theater in Hong Kong, or running around the streets of Manhattan with a live lion.
She was once arrested for dancing buck naked in a Chicago nightclub. She put on a leopard skin bikini and hopped into Trevi Fountain in Rome. In Japan, she confronted Marlon Brando over rumors that they were dating. She was once kidnapped by rebels in Algeria and said she “danced her way to freedom.”
Her scandals made the newspapers and she saved the clippings. My Aunt Charle’n was a real life diva, which was kind of huge thing for a little gay boy like me. She was the one person in our family who had done the kinds of things I wanted to do. Things you could only dream of. She was inspiring.
It was my Aunt Charle’n who convinced my grandmother to move to a strange little island called Guam -- the place my mother and father were married and ultimately where I was born. If it weren’t for my Aunt Charle’n's adventurous spirit, I wouldn’t even be here."
