Kit Carson County Pioneers:
Klaas and Gertie (Woodstra) Van Der Meer, 6 South 48 West
One of the early settlers in Charles Mix County, South Dakota in the 1880's was Leendert Van Der Meer - possibly an uncle of Klaas?
The first general merchandise store was put up by Messrs. P. Eernisse and
L. Van der Meer.
In 1910 Kit Carson County, Klaas is farming, married twelve years to Gertie, both 34. Antge is 5, Gerbrigg 4, and Born 2, all three born in South Dakota.
Klaas proved up 349 acres in 8, 6 South, 48W in 1917.
Klaas registered for WWI at Vona, Colorado, farming, with Celeste as a reference. He was born Ausut 2, 1874.
In 1920 Kit Carson County, Klaas is farming, with Gertie, both 45, Annie 15, Gertie 13,and Bazrney 11 born in South Dakota, Stena 9, Thesa 7 and Henrietta 5 born in Colorado.
Klaas and Gertie are farming in Kit Carson County in 1930,
both immigrating from Holland in 1902, with Stena 19, Thresa 17, and Henrietta 15.
Klaas and Gertie are in Ripon, California in 1940 - where he's a school janitor.

ANNA
Anna Vandermeer Smit Danhof was born in 1904 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, dying 2004 in California,
also buried in Ripon with Henry Smith SMIT 1892-1945.
GERTIE
Gerti Vandermeer Eggink 1906-1994 was born in South Dakota, buried in Escalon, California with Gerrit Eggink 1906-1986.
BARNEY
"BARNEY VANDER MEER, 91, of Akron died Dec. 1 in Greeley. Services were Dec. 4, with burial at Akron Cemetery . Mr. Meer was born in Platte, S.D., on Feb. 19, 1908. He married Frances Schrader, 1933. He was a wheat farmer, and he raised cattle. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by a son, Dale, Akron; two daughters, Mary Poos, Greeley and Glenda, Aurora; three sisters, Ann Danhof, Stena Van Andel and Theresa Verver; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

"Funeral services were Nov. 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Interment was at Akron Cemetery .
She was born Frances M. Schrader on Jan. 14, 1910, in Fleming. On May 17, 1933, she married Barney Vander Meer.
Mrs. Vander Meer earned a degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Vona and taught at High Prairie School and in Arickaree for 13 years before retiring.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron.
Her interests included sewing, knitting and crochet.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Dale, Akron; two daughters, Mary Poos, Greeley, and Glenda Vander Meer, Aurora; a brother, John Schrader, Oregon; two sisters, Augusta Hagan, Lakewood, and Hazel Volberding, Akron; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Akron; or to the Tree of Life, c/o Washington County Nursing Home in Akron.

In 1981 Mr. and Mrs. Dale Vander Meer of Akron came to Eckley for the second birthday of their granddaughter Janie Dayle Brotton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Brotton - Janie had a sister Angelia.
"Jimmy Ray Brotton, 81, died April 22, 2011 at Colorado Plains Medical Center. Jim was born April 1, 1930 in San Bernardino, CA to Jesse and Lizzie Brotton. Jim married Susan Vander Meer in 1978. To this union, they had 2 children Angela and Jamie. As a child, he grew up in the Phoenix area. He later moved to Colorado. He worked several years for Y-W Electric in the Eckley and Akron area, which he enjoyed as he loved working outside. After retiring he enjoyed reading western books. He had a fabulous collection of Louis Lamour books. As he always said, “give me a good book and a comfortable chair and I am in heaven”. Jim loved building and flying radio controlled airplanes with his dear friends Al Ward and John Lingwall. Jim was a good man. But most importantly, he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He touched many lives. He always had a smile and a good word for everyone. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. He will be remembered as a very loving “papa” by his grandkids. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Lizzie Brotton, his sister Betty Drew, and brothers Billy and Bobby. He is survived by his wife Sue, his daughters Angie (JJ) Bowman of Yuma and Jamie Wolbach of Otis. Grandchildren Jaydan, Kiley, Tyler, Erick, and Sheyann and his in-laws Dale and Joyce Vander Meer. At his request, his ashes will be taken home to Phoenix. Memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Brotton Memorial c/o Brenner Funeral Home. "
STENA
Stena Vandemeer Van Andel 1910-2009 is also buried in Ripon, with Mike Van Andel 1912-1997.
"Stena Van Andel, 99, of Ripon died Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Bethany Home.
She was born to Klaas and Gertie Vander Meer on April 23, 1910 in Vona, Colorado.
In 1930 she went to work in Denver, Colorado as a nanny for two little girls.
She moved to California in 1930 where she met Mike Van Andel and were married on April 5, 1936. They lived in the Ripon area and farmed two different ranches for many years. There they raised three children. In 1979 they moved to Modesto and later returned to Ripon in 1996.
Stena is survived by her children; Geri & Bruce Hekman, Anita & Gary Hasper and Mike & Evelyn Van Andel; her grandchildren Greg & Jeanette Hekman, Brent & Sandy Hekman, Jana & Dan Tanis, Laurie & Chris Van Groningen, all of Ripon, Scott & Kristy Hasper, Steve Hasper, Suzanne & Philip Schuiteman, all of Michigan, David & Barb Van Andel of Romana, CA and Amy & Todd of Coarse Gold, CA, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and one sister Theresa Verver of Ripon. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three sisters Ann Danhof, Gertie Eggink, and Henreitta Meninga and one brother Barney Vander Meer.

THERESA
Theresa Vandermeer Verver 1912-2012 is buried in Ripon, with Garrett S. Verver 1914-1995?
"Theresa Verver went home to her Lord, July 30, 2012 at 9 a.m., peacefully with her family at her bedside at Bethany Home. Born on August 28, 1912 in Vona, Colorado to Klaas and Gertie (Woudstra) Vander Meer, Theresa live to be a beautiful 100 years young. She met her husband of 65 years, Garrett Verver, on a blind date in 1936 and they were married January 25, 1939. She was proceeded in death by her first child, (still born daughter), her daughter-in law Gertrude, and her husband Garrett. Her four sons Sherman and his wife Cecilia, Richard and his wife Eileen, Gary and Ken, 10 grand children, and 10 great grand children, and countless nieces and nephews survive Theresa. We all enjoyed the afghans and baby blankets she knitted for her family. She had a very clear mind till the end and did puzzles and brain teasers daily. She had many friends at Bethany and worked in the library till very recently. She was still bowling weekly with Garrett in her 80’s and was very healthy all of her life. Theresa was employed at the Ripon Bakery for many years and did a bakery route after her fourth son was born."

Henrietta married Benjamin Meninga on Sept 8, 1939 in San Joaquin County, California.

Henrietta Vandermeer Meninga 1914-1989 was born at Vona, Colorado, and is buried in Ripon "no marker on this plot."

1960 "Questioning of a 17-year-old youth by FBI officers from Reno has ended a kidnaping hoax which drew law-enforcement officers from two states and FBI agents to the vicinity of Stateline Friday. Allegedly kidnaped was Howard Meninga of Lakewood, Calif. He reported he had been kidnaped at gunpoint in Long Beach and forced to drive his car to Stateline. It was not until late yesterday-evening, when FBI officers from Reno questioned the youth that he admitted his kidnaping story to be false.
