In 1900 Charles Mix County, South Dakota, Johannes born August 1855, married 20 years to Wobbelje October 1852, Jacob Sept 1881, and Annie May 1883 born in teh Netherlands. Trienje August 1887, Ankie Feb 1890, Jurrien Jan 1890 Hendrik January 1892 , Deiable March 1894, and John July 1896 were all born in South Dakota.
In 1910 Charles Mix County, John Smit is 54, Lena 57,
both born in Holland. They have Ankie 20, Henry 18, Jerry 18, Dena 1, and John 14, all kids born in South Dakota.
Lena 1852-1918 is buried in Charles Mix County.
John applied for a passport in 1919, born August 28, 1855 at Oldhove, Netherlands, emigrated on teh S.S. Ampsterdam arriving March 1, 1885, living at Platte South Dakota, where he was naturalized.
John could have been traveling, and was missed in the 1920 census.
Or the Kit Carson County enumerator missed him - and his daughter Ankie Van Goor and his son Henry.
John died at Vona, Colorado on June 18, 1927, and is buried in Charles Mix County, # 48178915.
JACOB
Jacob Smit, 24, married Ernestiena R. Dyk of Platte, South Dakota on September 5, 1906 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. He lived at Geddes.
They had Johannes born and died July 14, 1907, buried in Charles Mix County # 48179203.
In 1910 Kit Carson County, Jacob is 28, Gean 25, both born in Holland, with Francis 1 born in South Dakota.
Jacob claimed a tract in 20, 6S, 48W in 1915.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Jacob, immigrating in 1885, is 38, naturalized in 1902.
Gena R. is 34, immigratingin in 1904, naturalized in 1906.
Frances 11, was born in South Dakota, John 8, Joe 7, Burton and Lena both 4, and Harry 1.
In 1930 Kit Carson County they have all five kids.
In 1940 Jacob and Grena have only Harry, 21.
Ennegiena Rensina "Gean" Dyk Smit 1884-1954 is buried in the Smit Cemetery, Kit Carson County # 48179743.
Jacob 1882-1951 is also buried in the Smit Cemetery # 39659315.

"Mildred Lorene Hagan Smit was born on January 15, 1915 in Mansfield, Missouri and passed away on October 11, 2011 in Loveland, Colorado. She moved to Colorado at the age of 18 months, and married John Smit in 1933. John and Mildred had 62 years together before his passing in 1995. They farmed near Vona, Colorado before moving to Loveland in 1948."
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Welch; grandsons John Welch and wife Theresa, Mark Welch and wife Ruth, and granddaughter Sarah Welch; great-grandchildren Jennifer Strickland and husband Bryan, Zachary Welch and wife Annie, Benjamin Welch and wife Rachel Joy, and Rachel Lorene Welch; great-great-grandchildren Rosalyn Welch, Trystan Strickland, and Denver Welch; as well as her much-loved nephews, nieces, and many good friends.
John 1911-1995 and Mildred are buried in Loveland.
"JOPLIN, Mo. — Lena Godfrey, age 92, passed away May 2, 2008, at 1:45 a.m.
Lena was born July 2, 1915, in Vona, Colo. She lived in Kansas until 1952, before moving to
Joplin. Her parents were Jacob and Enna Hiena Reinzena Dyke Smit.
She was a homemaker and belonged to the Forest Park Baptist Church, Joplin.
Lena married Luther Fred Godfrey Feb. 22, 1938. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2002.
She had one son, Leonard D. Godfrey, of Estero, Fla.; and two daughters, Elberta Diggs,
of Webb City, Mo., and Carolyn Cole, of Dallas, Texas.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, John Smit, Harry Smit and Burton Smit;
a sister, Frances Broersma; and a grandson, Scott Alan Diggs.
A private interment has been held. The family will have a memorial service at a later date."

Ruby Irene Rogers Smit was born May 17, 1913 in Norway,
Kansas, to Jesse Anderson and Bertha Jane (Wickliff) Rogers.
She lived a full life and productive life dedicated to helping others until her death May 15,2011 in Johnson, Kansas.Ruby was 97. The Rogers (her parents) lived near Burr Oak,Kansas, a community made up mostly of farmland and tree-lined creeks and lakes. Ruby's younger years revolved around farm and school activities with her four sisters and three brothers. She was 13 when the family moved to Kirk, Colorado, once again to farm and ranch. Ruby attended schools in Burr Oak and Kirk. An important event in her life occurred at age 17 when she, her sister, Leta, and a friend were baptized in the cold water of a stock tank at a church meeting near Joes, Colorado. Ruby continued to be a dedicated Christian throughout her life. The Rogers farm was a busy place when Ruby was growing up. She learned to sew, quilt and embroider and over the years produced many wonderful pieces of needle work. Ruby did all the chores involved with farming of that time, learning from her parents as she went along. She thoroughly enjoyed working with her mother at any tasks at hand. On November 14,1945, Ruby married Harry Smit, a veteran who had returned from World War II action.The newlyweds settled down on his family homestead 18 miles north of Vona, Colorado. Once again it was a busy schedule. Ruby often helped Harry by working cattle and driving tractor. The Smits raised Angus cattle and various farm crops. In addition , Ruby maintained a flock of 500 hens and sold eggs and cream. She also raised turkeys for meat markets in the Chicago area. Gardening was another serious project and she planted big gardens.Her special hobby was roses. Ruby's rose gardens were legendary. Two children were born into the family; Harry Eugene (Gene) in 1949 and Sandra Kay (Sandy) in 1954. Both were adored by their parents. Because of an injury at birth Gene required special attention and Ruby and Harry cared for him until his death in 1992. The Smits moved to Burlington in 1980. With fewer farm chores to do, they became involved in community projects and were among the volunteers working to introduce Burlington's Old Town to the area. And once again, Ruby grew splendid roses. She and Harry also spent special time with their grandsons, Justin and Clint, children of their daughter, Sandy and her husband, Homer Mundell. Ruby baked birthday cakes shaped like lambs for each and quilted special quilts for "the boys". After Harry's death in 2004. Ruby continued to live in Burlington until 2007 when she moved to Walsh, Colorado to be near Sandy and her family. During her time there she enjoyed going with Sandy or Homer to feed or check cattle or do any other chore, like mow the Minneapolis Cemetery. Ruby "loved to mow". At the time of her death she had plans to buy some new roses for her rose garden and to put out some tomato plants. Surviving are her daughter, Sandy Mundell; grandsons, Justin and his wife Desirae and their children, Reece, Grady, and Cooper, from Springfield, Colorado, and Clint and his wife Lauren of Liberal, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; son; son-in-law, Homer Mundell; her parents; sisters Sadie Sloniker, Susie Shively, Leta Maag, and Edith Rogers; and brothers, Bill, Jess and Ed Rogers.
Burton Smit married Georgene Jewett on July 15, 1936 in Golden, Colorado. They had Nedra Fae Smiton April 15, 1937 at Vona.
In 1940 Kit Carson County, Burton is farming, with Georgene 24, Nedra 2, and Lee 1, all born in Colorado.
September 27, 1962 Skagit County, Washington "Mr. and Mrs. Burton Smit of Denver, Colorado
were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wenrich Wednesday evening.
Mr. Smit used to live in Marblemount."
Nedra was named Vandenberg in 1956 (marrying Robert L Vanderberg in Skagit Washington on October 18, 1955), as Ceselski in 1967, as Williams in 1969, and at death July 15, 2006 was listed as Vandenberg.

The Seibert Dutch Reformed Christian Church records have Hendrick Smit coming from Friesland, S.D. born March 14, 1892, coming into the church August 7, 1913.
Henry claimed a tract in 29, 6S 48W in 1917.
He enlisted in October 1917, discharged August 1919, a PFC in M.G. Company, 4th Infantry.

In 1936 the certificate of Henry Smit and family from the Vona, Colorado church was received - probably at the Ripon California church.
In 1940 San Joaquin County, Henry is a laborer, 48, Anna 35, with John K. 13, Clarence 12, Leon Henry 7 born in Colorado, andGladys A. 2 in California.
Henry 1892-1945 is buried in Ripon California # 112628216, with Anna 1904-2004.
The California death index has him born January 10, 1892 in South Dakota, dying March 1, 1945 in San Joaquin County.

Agnes Smit was born February 2, 1890 in Platte, Charles Mix County to Johannes Smit
and Wobeltje Hummel,
dying as VanGoor in Stanislaus County, California July 30, 1973. She's buried in Ripon # 113089447.

Ankie married Luburtus Van Goor in Sioux County on September 9, 1915.
She said she was 26, born at Edgerton, Minnesota (should be Edgerton, South Dakota) to Johannes Smit and Lena Hummel.

In 1922 Luburtus is farming in Ripon California.

Agnes 1890-1973 is buried in Ripon # 113089447.
HENRY - son of John
Henry claimed a tract in 29, 6S 48W in 1917.
Dena, born March 24, 1894 in South Dakota, married Nick Deboeer, and they're in Modesto, California in 1920. Nick is 29, Dena 25, with Elvin 4 and newborn Pauline. John Smit 23 is with them.
Dena died November 1, 1959 in Stanislaus County, mother's maiden name Hunnel.
