"Elizabeth Ellen YARNELL married 3 Oct 1861 in Ada, Hardin County Ohio to Virgineus CHANDLER. They had a daughter born 1881 Shelbyville, Illinois."Virgineus H. Chandler cash-claimed a quarter in 24, 7S, 44W in 1891, and proved up another in sections 8 and 17 in 1897.Robert E. Chandler 1936-1970 is buried in Toledo, Washington # 9571411, with four children all dying in 1970. "Residents of Toledo, a southern Lewis County community of 600 were still registering shock and dismay Thursday in the aftermath of a tragic fire that claimed the lives of a Toledo volunteer fireman and four of his children. "I have never seen so many men with tears in their eyes," said a woman here as she described reaction to the Wednesday fire that saw Robert Chandler, 33, and four of his five children -- Margaret, 9; Richard, 13; Donna, 8; and Teresa, burn to death in a conflagration that destroyed their home. Combined services for the family members will be Saturday morning. Chandler's wife, Marilee, who was rescued from the blaze, was listed in fair condition with second and possible third-degree burns Thursday in St. John's Hospital, Longview. A fifth child, Eugene, 14, was released from the same hospital Wednesday after treatment for first-degree bums. Evelyn Lee Simpson, a longtime Craig resident, died April 20, 2010, following a brief illness. She was 81. Evelyn Lee Chandler Simpson was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Burlington, the daughter of Earl Henry and Edith Lee (Pemberton) Simpson. She was raised and attended school in Denver until she was 17, at which time her family moved to Hayden. Evelyn married Kenneth Theodore Simpson on Oct. 6, 1946, in Hayden. They became the parents of three children, Janet, Peggy and Robert. While in Hayden, Evelyn was active in the Ladies Home Demonstration Club and the Civic Women's Club. She was a member of a ladies upholstery group at Hayden Congregational Church, and also worked as a cook at the Hayden hospital. In 1964, Evelyn and her family moved to Craig. Evelyn worked at a bakery and later at Valley View Manor Nursing Home, where she was a cook and dietician for 15 years. Evelyn was active in 4-H and helped with the Routt County Fair as her children grew up, and she enjoyed playing cards, cooking, gardening and going with her family on camping and fishing trips. She was always eager to try new recipes, and made an afghan for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Evelyn and Ken had spent the winters for many years in Casa Grande, Ariz., where they made many lasting friendships. |
Lifelong Burlington, Colorado resident Bertha Amanda Jacobson passed away on March 3, 2011 at the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington. She was 97 years old. Amanda, as she was known by all, was born on January 19, 1914 in Burlington, Colorado to Francis Aaron and Bertha Sarah (Floerke) Chandler. She was one of eight children. Amanda grew up in the Burlington area and attended school in Burlington, and graduated from Burlington High School in 1932. On July 19, 1939, Amanda married Lester Leonard Jacobson. To this union four children, Larry, Orin, Mary Lou and Carolyn were born. Amanda had several hobbies including; embroidery, fishing, gardening, playing cards and bingo. She was one of the original members of the pinochle club which started in 1959. She always loved having the family dinners at her home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Amanda especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Amanda is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester, three sisters, Leah Crites, Rachael Moore and Leona Barrett; three brothers, Floyd Chandler, Jake Chandler and Clarence Chandler. She is survived by her four children, sons Larry Jacobson and his wife Delores, and Orin and Cheryl Jacobson of Burlington, Colorado, daughters Mary Lou Williams and her husband Hal of Cheyenne Wells, and Carolyn Russell and her husband Thomas of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one sister Beulah Lammey of Missouri. "Beulah Frances Lammey passed away peacefully on March 1, 2013. Beulah was born August 20, 1916 to Frank and Bertha Chandler. Beulah was one of eight children. She grew up in Burlington, CO. Beulah and her sister, Leona, moved to Denver, CO at a young age where she met Gene Lammey. Gene and Beulah married on July 16, 1941. They had their first daughter Bonnie in March 1943. Soon after Bonnie's birth they moved to Otis, CO to a farm where their second daughter Gail was born in August 1944. They stayed on the farm for about eight years before they returned to Derby, CO where they built their home. Beulah worked at Jepson and Pepsi. However, most of her life was spent as a homemaker. Beulah and Gene loved traveling in their younger days. Some of their travel destinations include Hawaii, Texas and Missouri. Beulah loved her flowers. Her yard was so beautiful. She put many hours and endless love into it. She loved to go camping and fishing. Beulah loved sewing. She always had Gene lookin' sharp! Beulah loved cooking big dinners for family and friends. Some unforgettable meals she made was her stew, home made bread, jello salads containing things such as stewed tomatoes, mayo, carrots, apples and pineapple. Not all together but combos you would never imagine and they were very tasty! Don't forget dessert, home made cake, pie, oatmeal raisin cookies, Billygoat cookies and coffee. Also, you could always find a bowl of popcorn on the counter, cookies in the bread box and a full candy dish. The love of Beulah's life was her family - grandkids, great grandkids and great great grandson. " |
Sarita Margaret (Hooker) Chandler, widow of Clarence A. Chandler, departed this life on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Good Samaritan Society in Goodland, Kan. The third child of Richard H. and Anna I. (Weir) Hooker, Sarita was born June 21, 1914 on her parent’s homestead 12 miles south of Otis. She received her formal education at the Victor School in Washington County, Colorado, graduating from the 8th grade in 1928. She attended High Prairie High School, 25 miles from her home, with her brothers Clarence and Lawrence. Sarita left school in 1929 when her brothers took employment working in the sugar beet fields and she no longer had transportation to and from the high school. Sarita’s first paid job was helping a neighbor slaughter and dress ducks. In 1932 she accepted employment as a caregiver for an elderly woman in the northwest Denver area. In 1934 she returned to her parents’ farm south of Otis to care for her ill mother. Following her mother’s recovery, Sarita was employed as a mother’s helper and housekeeper for Mrs. Ray Dalton of Otis. On April 11, 1942, Sarita married Clarence Aaron Chandler in Goodland, Kan. To this loving marriage was born one daughter, Judy Darlene, and one son, Dennis Aaron. Clarence and Sarita made their home on the Rell Morrow Ranch northeast of Burlington in Kit Carson County. In the fall of 1978 they retired from farming and ranching and moved to their home in Burlington. During the years that followed, Sarita filled her life loving and caring for her family, gardening, babysitting for the Young Mothers of Burlington, and taking short trips with Clarence to visit friends and family or go fishing. A devout Christian, Sarita will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy was her family. She cherished every moment she spent with her children and grandchildren. Sarita was a talented homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, embroidery and handiwork of all kinds. She was especially interested in gathering information about her ancestors and preserving the precious memories of her family. Preceding her in death are her husband, Clarence; infant granddaughter, Crissine Joy Rico; her parents; brothers - Clarence Robert Hooker, Lawrence Woodrow Hooker, Wilson Weir Hooker, Robert Winfield Hooker and Nile Everett Hooker; and sisters, Wilma Fern Spangler and Clara June Spears. Mourning her passing are her daughter, Judy (Harold) Rico of Burlington; her son Dennis (Susan) Chandler of Snowflake, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Jannon and Cale Rico, of Burlington; Julia (Brian) Buell and three great-grandchildren, Eric, Kaitlin, and Seth Buell of Layton, Utah. She is also survived by her sister, Thelma Parker of Walden and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Burlington, with Pastor Gary Bazer officiating. Following her service at the church, Sarita was laid to rest beside her husband Clarence in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington. Visitation was held on Monday, March 5, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Love Funeral Home in Burlington. Memorials may be made in Sarita’s name and may be left at or sent to the Bank of the West, 502 14th St., P.O. Box 518, Burlington, CO 80807.
