The Homestead Act caused a rapid population growth in Cheyenne County between 1890 and 1920. Many small communites were established in the county. One and two room country school houses dotted the landscape. Sometimes a school house was moved to a new location to accomodate changing demographics. The schools usually included grades 1 to 8. Many were named for the owner of the land they stood on. Eventually, the small schools were consolidated into larger schools. The following list of schools was taken primarily from the Cheyenne County History, 1979.
