Nathan enlisted in the New Mexico Volunteers, and served as a Blacksmith for 3 years. He came to Saguache in 1866, and was the first to settle on Saguache creek. He practiced his blacksmith trade, raised crops and livestock and ran freight by wagon all over the San Luis Valley. The remains of one of his freight wagons is on display at Ft Garland. He donated land to the town of Saguache, this area is known as "Russell’s Addition". Much more information available about Nathan. |
