Winter Park a.k.a. Hideaway Park

1935

HIDEAWAY PARK, 1935 or so. As some of you know, for decades the name "Winter Park" referred only to the ski area itself, with the few scattered homes and businesses next to it (across the river and train tracks) unofficially called "Old Town Winter Park", and the actual town a mile or so down valley was "Hideaway Park". The name came from the fact that there were small meadows, or parks, hidden away in the pine trees around the junction of the Fraser River and Vasquez Creek. When the town incorporated in the late 1970s they went with "Winter Park" because the boosters and real estate interests at that end of the valley have always had big dreams of being a destination ski town, so they chose the name to link the town to the ski area and the old name was jettisoned, although they did recently name a public park "Hideaway Park."
