Sgt. Chester McLean Killed in Action

Another Yuma county man has joined that regiment of gold star heroes, it was learned Monday, when a telegram from the War Department informed Mr. and Mrs. Tyson McLean, Kirk, that their son, Sergeant Chester McLean, had been kill in action on January 10, on the island of Luzon.

Sergeant McLean had been in the service of his country since February 1943, and in that time he was home only once on furlough. He was born and raised near Kirk and was a graduate of Kirk High School. Sergeant McLean is the third member of his high school graduating class to make the supreme sacrifice for his country. The others were Sergeant Philip Doddridge and Sergeant Emmett Wise.

Two other messages received in the Joes community on Monday brought news of the deaths of two soldiers in the European theater of war. Mrs. Myrtle Queen received a telegram from the secretary of war informing her that her son-in-law Roy Spencer, a paratrooper, had been killed on January 12, in Belgium. Roy had spent his furlough with his wife's family and friends before going overseas. His wife, Anna, is employed in Denver. That same day, Joe White received word that his nephew, a paratrooper, had been killed in the European Theater.

A grateful people mourn the loss of these dear boys and humbly vow that they shall not have died in vane, but will live forever, enshrined in the heart of a nation, that through their sacrifice, will establish a lasting peace.
