William "Bill" Bullard, well-known Wray man and son of the Gazette's editors and co-publishers, was one of the 84 passengers who died in an Eastern Airline crash Monday, minutes after takeoff from New York.
Bill, a private in the United States Army, was enjoying a furlough from Army training. He had flown from Fort Gordon, Georgia to spend the weekend in New York with his fiance, Miss Inga Savelsberg, and was returning to his base when the airliner exploded.
William Bradford Bullard was born March 1, 1939, at Yuma, the youngest child and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Bullard.
He moved to Wray with his parents in 1941, at the age of two, where his father became editor and publisher of the Wray Gazette.
Bill excelled both scholastically and athletically during his school years in Wray. He was a four-year football letterman and lettered three years with the Eagle's wrestling squad. Bill became a state champion wrestler in 1957, capturing the 165 pound division, and helping win Wray's first State Wrestling Championship.
Upon graduation from the Wray High School in 1957, Bill enrolled at Colorado University, from which he was a cum laude graduate in 1961. Bill was admitted to Columbia University as a graduate law student in 1961, graduating last June. He went into the US Army in October 1964, after spending the summer and early fall with his parents in Wray and assisting with publication of the Gazette. He would have reported for OCS March 1.
Survivors include his parents, sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Groves, and fiance, Miss Inge Savelsburg of New York City.
The Rev. Hamlyn conducted a memorial service for Pvt. Bullard Sunday February 21 at the Wray Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Friday March 5, after recovery of his body and burial was in Grandview Cemetery.
