On last Tuesday morning occurred the death of Alexander Reed. His death was very sudden and was not
preceded by any illness. He had been troubled with attacks of heart trouble
for several years and it was one of these attacks that caused his sudden death.
It was only a few weeks ago that he returned to Wray after quite an extended
visit in the East.
Mr. Reed was born in Indiana in 1833. He united
with the Methodist church when just a small boy. When he was twenty-one
years of age he moved to Webster county, Iowa, where he homesteaded land
and lived until eight years ago, when he came to Colorado.
He was married twice and his first wife died in 1870. His second
wife died in 1905. Mr. Reed was the father of fourteen children,
ten of whom are still living: Wiley Reed, of Creston, Iowa:
Mrs. Harlan and Mrs. Bottonfielild, both of Atlanta, Georgia;
Mrs. Wissler, of Jewell, Iowa: Alonzo ane Winfield Reed, of South Dakota:
Isaac and Will Reed and Mrs. B. E. Hollingsworth, of Wray: and Frank Reed
of Omaha, Nebraska.
"He was married to Melinda Long. To this union were born six children:
Mesdames L. S. Bottonfield and G. W. Harlan of Atlanta, Georgia;
W. L. Reed of Creston, Iowa : Mrs. H. L. Whissler of Jewell, Iowa;
and Isaac Reed and Mrs. D. E. Hollingsworth of Wray. In 1872, his wife died and
two years later he married Columbia Myers. To this union four sons were born:
Will Reed of Wray: Alonzo and Winfield Reed of Selma, South Dakota; and
Frank Keed of Omaha, Nebraska. "
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Isaac Reed home. The
services were conducted by Rev. A. W. Rice, pastor of the Methodist
church. On Tuesday evening Isaac Reed, Mrs. B. E. Hollingsworth, and
Will Keed and wife accompanied the body to Webster county, Iowa,
where interment will be made.
Mr. Reed had many friends in Wray who extend their sympathy to the mourning
ones at this time."

Isaac and Will Reed, and his sister, Mrs. B. E. Hollingsworth,
and also looking after business matters, left Friday for his home.

Lemma Lucinda, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Mendenhall, was born at
Ottumwa, Iowa, on July 27, 1885. She attended the public schools of Ottumwa
and later spent two years in attendance at the Central Holiness University
at Oskaloosa, Iowa. It was there that she met William S. Reed. There on July
28, 1909, they were united in marriage. In the autumn of the same year they
came to Yuma county so that practically their whole home life has been in
this community. Mrs. Reed was bereaved of her mother when she was only one
and one-half years old, and was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. Frances
Lucinda Rupe. Her father died when she was only fifteen years of age. Three
children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Reed and with their father mourn the
passing of the heart of their home. Besides these Mrs. Reed is survived by a
brother, Charles Mendenhall: and a sister, Mrs. Myrta Tyrrell, both of
Salem, Oregon. For many months Mrs. Reed had been a sufferer and had been in
hospitals most of the time for the past six months. She closed her eyes in
sleep at the Colorado General hospital at 5:00 o’clock on Monday morning,
Sept. 23, 1935. In early life she accepted Jesus as the Lord of her life and
united with the Methodist church. Her college training was for definite
religious service. When she came to this community she placed her membership
with the M. E. church at Vernon and later when the family moved to Wray her
name was added to the roster of the church here. Four years ago she and her
children united with the Christian church. She was recognized for her
devotion and her willingness to help any time, anywhere. In the Woman’s
Council, in her Bible class, in the church services, in the music at church,
at funerals and on special occasions, her talent and time she freely gave.
How we shall miss her, “Yes, I’ll do the best I can.” Such lives are all too
rare, fine talent, beautiful spirit “I can not say and I will not say that
she is dead. She is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
she has wandered into an unknown land and left us dreaming how very fair it
must needs be since she lingers there. And you, Oh you, who the wildest
yearn for, the old time step and the glad return, think of her faring on as
dear in the love of there, as the love of here. Think of her still as the
same. I say, she is not dead, she is just away.” Funeral services were held
Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Christian church at 2:00 p. m., conducted by
Rev. Clark Bower. The remains were laid to rest in Grandview cemetery.

William is widowed in 1940 Wray, 63, living with the Arthur Owen family. Arthur is a janitor at the court house, 54, born in Kansas.
May 1946 "At a special meeting the evening of May 2, Wray’s new town board voted
to purchase the W. S. Reed place, approximately 10 acres, joining the present
Municipal Swimming Pool park on the west. The property was purchased at its listed price
of $8,500 and $1,000 was paid down in escrow. The deal, however, is subject to the
approval of the heirs of the Mrs. W. S. Reed and cannot he consumated until they sign a
release on the property. The sale is also subject to a lease held by W. A. Rock who now
lives on the property. Mr. Rock has agreed with the town to give them immediate
possession of enough of the land to establish a baseball grounds for the present
season, if the deal is approved by the heirs. Purpose of the purchase was to provide
the town with adequate room for a recreational park program,
and a possible future site for a hospital building or for Improvements to the
present park. The land is especially desirable to the town as it adjoins the present
park holdings and enables the city to unify its recreation faculties for
future development."
May 1947 "Mr. W. S. Reed, long time resident of Wray and Yuma county, returned to Wray the latter part of last week, and plans to make his home here again. Mr. Reed has been making his home in Denver the past year, but says Wray is still home to him in many respects and he is back to stay."
