THANKS TO SUSAN DOAK

If you are a fan of old photography from the McCook area, you have no doubt seen the name Fearn with a notation of copyright on a picture or two. William Brooks Fearn was apparently the go to photographer in McCook during the early 1900s and according to his advertisements in the McCook Tribune, he had a studio at 110 Main Avenue (Norris) from which he operated. That building would today be the south door into Fuller’s Family Restaurant and also housed the Olympia during my childhood.

W.B. Fearn’s studio was well known apparently because in the 1907, A. G. Bump advertised his real estate and insurance business as being “first door south of Fearn’s gallery.” Additionally on May 4, 1911, the McCook Tribune noted the new “Greek Shine Parlor. A small cement block building being built on the north side of the Fearn photo gallery, which when completed, will shelter a Greek shine parlor of modest dimensions. Which is mildly metropolitan, at all events.” (I’m going out a limb here assuming that this was a shoe-shine parlor.)

In the March 8, 1901 McCook Tribune came the following wanted ad-“To trade for McCook real estate, forty acres of fine second-bottom land on Republican River. For full particulars, see Fearn, the Photographer, McCook, Nebraska.” Apparently the ad was successful because in the July 31, 1903 Tribune it was announced that “W. B. Fearn has commenced work on his new residence corner of McFarland and Dodge Streets.” (One of the corners of East D and East 3rd streets)

Mr. Fearn was still in McCook when the 1910 census was taken, he was married and 52 years old. However, he moved to Denver sometime between that and 1922, when he passed away. He is buried in a Wheatridge, Colorado cemetery.

His photos, however, live on in several publications about McCook’s early days and the following are two that I thought I would spark some conversation with. So here are the two questions: Why are these two photographs related? Do these buildings still stand in McCook today?

September 1902 Webster County, Nebraska "W. B. Fearn of McCook was in the city Monday, visiting with relatives. He left Tuesday morning for Missouri, where he goes to visit a son whom he has not soon for seven years."

1885 - 1935 BURIAL Grandview Cemetery Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, MEMORIAL ID 63096743.
Lemma Lucinda, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Mendenhall, was born at Ottumwa, Iowa, on July 27, 1885. She attended the public schools of Ottumwa and later spent two years in attendance at the Central Holiness University at Oskaloosa, Iowa. It was there that she met William S. Reed. There on July 28, 1909, they were united in marriage. In the autumn of the same year they came to Yuma county so that practically their whole home life has been in this community. Mrs. Reed was bereaved of her mother when she was only one and one-half years old, and was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. Frances Lucinda Rupe. Her father died when she was only fifteen years of age. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Reed and with their father mourn the passing of the heart of their home. Besides these Mrs. Reed is survived by a brother, Charles Mendenhall: and a sister, Mrs. Myrta Tyrrell, both of Salem, Oregon. For many months Mrs. Reed had been a sufferer and had been in hospitals most of the time for the past six months. She closed her eyes in sleep at the Colorado General hospital at 5:00 o’clock on Monday morning, Sept. 23, 1935. In early life she accepted Jesus as the Lord of her life and united with the Methodist church. Her college training was for definite religious service. When she came to this community she placed her membership with the M. E. church at Vernon and later when the family moved to Wray her name was added to the roster of the church here. Four years ago she and her children united with the Christian church. She was recognized for her devotion and her willingness to help any time, anywhere. In the Woman’s Council, in her Bible class, in the church services, in the music at church, at funerals and on special occasions, her talent and time she freely gave. How we shall miss her, “Yes, I’ll do the best I can.” Such lives are all too rare, fine talent, beautiful spirit “I can not say and I will not say that she is dead. She is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand she has wandered into an unknown land and left us dreaming how very fair it must needs be since she lingers there. And you, Oh you, who the wildest yearn for, the old time step and the glad return, think of her faring on as dear in the love of there, as the love of here. Think of her still as the same. I say, she is not dead, she is just away.” Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Christian church at 2:00 p. m., conducted by Rev. Clark Bower. The remains were laid to rest in Grandview cemetery.
