July 1935 "Clair (Tuffy) Ralph was critically injured in an automobile collision about 1 a. m. Sunday morning a mile west of Laird. Ralph was standing on the side of a car that was being pulled by another car, when a car traveling in the opposite direction collided with the car that Ralph was standing on the running board of. Ralph sustained fractures of the bones of both legs below the knees and he was otherwise injured. He was rushed to the Wray hospital where his injuries were given attention. Tuesday night Mr. Ralph was taken in the Hitchcock Ambulance, to a hospital in Denver. As we write this report of the accident, Ralph is said to be in a critical condition. It is said that the flesh of the lower limbs was badly mangled and that dirt and gravel that got into the wounds at the time of the accident increased the seriousness of his injuries. A report of the accident as given The Rattler by Sheriff Raymond Van Horn, who was called to the scene of the trouble, is as follows: Jim Rowley and wife, Mr. Turtin and wife and three sons, May Wacker, Olin Wacker, and Ralph Rowley ware traveling west in a Ford V-8. The Ralph car an old Chevrolet bearing no license plate, having failed to function, was being pulled behind the Ford. Riding in this Chevrolet car were Earl Roberts, Mrs. Clair Ralph, Ray Ralph and wife, Howard Cumley and wife and two children, and Clair Ralph who was standing on the running board of the car. (Den Cuney, Mrs. Maud Smith, and, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drommond were traveling east in the Cuney Chevrolet and in meeting the Ford Chevrolet above mentioned Chevrolet cars collided. Clair Ralph was thrown or dragged off of the side of the car and suffered the injuries mentioned above. Both cars were quite badly damaged. Strange as it may seem all of the other occupants of the cars escaped uninjured. The accident was one of the worst to occur here in recent months. Bad as it was, it could have been much more serious, since so many people were in the cars that crashed together."

1946

May 1946 "Family and friends were shocked Saturday, May 11, 1946 to learn of the sudden passing of Marion D. Pickett, long time resident of Wray and Yuma county. Marion had been in apparent good health and was engaged in his work as State Brand Inspector, assisting at the Haxtun livestock sale when death occurred, diagnosed as a heart attack.
Marion Dean Pickett, son of Chas. D. and Nell Pickett, was born Jan. 15, 1883 in Sylvester township, Monticello, Wise., and passed away as above stated at the age of 63 years, 3 months and 27 days. The Pickett family moved to Wray when Marion was just 3 years of age. He attended school here, graduating with the high school class of 1962. After graduation he attended college at Franklin, Nebr. On May 18, 1907 the deceased was united in marriage with Opal Grant at Wray, Colo. Nine children were born to this union, three sons and six daughters. I Mr. and Mrs. Pickett moved to Franklin, Nebr., shortly after their marriage and resided there about 4 months, then returned to Wray where they made their home with the exception of a few years spent at Cornish, Colo. During the past several years Marion held the position of State Brand Inspector for this region. His knowledge of cattle and their brands was a valuable aid to cattle raisers and livestock owners of the community. It was on one of these inspection trips that death came to Marion. He and his son, Leo, left Wray at noon to attend the sale at the Haxtun Livestock Pavilion. He had just arrived, stepped from the car and in a matter of minutes death occurred.
The passing of Marion Pickett removes another of the pioneers of this community. His cheerful humor and ready smile will always be remembered by his friends and acquaintances, who were legion.
He is survived by his wife, Opal of Wray; three sons, Charles of Pasadena, Calif., James and Leo of Wray; six daughters, Mr. Viola Ralph, Mrs. Isabelle Scrubby and Mrs. Katherine Hughes of Denver, and Mrs. Jessie Thompson, Mrs. Harriett Matthew of Calif., and Mrs. Maxine Wood of Detroit, Mich; 19 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; his father Charles D. Pickett, and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Broderick and Mrs. Merle Groves, all of Wray, as well as many less near relatives and a host of friends.

A letter that Dewey Goodman received from Major F. W. McKie last May told at the two brothers seeing each other in England, and reported that they had both gone to England on toe same convoy.
