Yuma County Pioneers:

Andrew Woodson and Margaret (Minnie) COUNTER Lawrence

Margaret was the daughter of Charles and Jane WATTS Counter / Caunter.  Charles was born in England, immigrated to Ontario, Canada, where Margaret was born, thence to Belleville, Kansas  It can't be coincidence that Margaret and her brother James N. Counter came to Wray about the same time.

Andrew "Wood" Lawrence was born in 1859 - one source says Missouri, another Illinois, and married Margaret in Belleville, where the first three kids were born - they had nine in total.

Andrew W. Lawrence proved up a homestead in 1895 just a mile west of Wray - very near the river - so he had prime land.

1899 "Mrs. Adelia Perry and son, Charlie, are expected to arrive Saturday night to spend the summer with the families of J.N. Counter and A.W. Lawrence.  Mrs. Perry is a sister of Mr. Counter and Mrs. Lawrence".

Andrew W. Lawrence in the 1900 Wray census, farming, born March 1859 in Missouri. He's married to Mary M., March 1862 in Canady (sic).  They have Anna A. May 1886 in Kansas, Adila M. February 1890 in Colorado, James W March 1892 in Colorado, Ruth J. October 1895 in Colorado, and Clara M. October 1898 in Colorado.



August 18, 1900 "A girl baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Lawrence Wednesday, August 15. All parties doing nicely."

1904 "Wood Lawrence began plastering the Pickett building Wednesday.  The work will be rushed with all possible speed.  It is expected that the building will be occupied by Sept. 1st."

They're still in Wray in 1910, With James, Ruth, Clara, Mary.  and have added Frank I. 6 and Andrew W. 4

1909 the Yuma Pioneer "Messrs. Bocock and Lawrence have the contract of raising and building the foundation under the Gerdis residence."


November 13, 1919 "A. W. Lawrence of Wray and Myrtle M. Jennings of Yuma were married November 8."

February 1921 Palisade Colorado "A. W. Lawrence left Tuesday for his home in Yuma after a visit at the home of his daughters Mrs. Dan Bocock and Mrs. J. F. Weaver."

Charles married Rebecca Hill - a railroad engineer, he was killed in a train accident. 

James Woodson Lawrence registered for WWI in Wray, saying he was born in Wray March 13, 1892, and was working for T.B. Groves lumberyard.

James married Louise Laurence.  1919 "It is reported that Walter Click, Clyde Cumley and James Lawrence have sailed from France for home.

1923 "Mr. and Mrs. James Lawrence are the parents of a fine baby girl, born Saturday, Nov 2."

James claimed 320 acres in section 17 , 3N 45W, proving up in 1921  - that's about six miles from the 1903 cash claim of Anna A. Lawrence in 3N 44W

In 1930 and 1940 James W. Louisa I., -born in Nebraska -and Helen V. born about 1924 are fruit growers in Palisade Colorado.

James W. Lawrence -1892-1948 and Louise I 1898-1968 are buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Grand Junction, Colorado.

 



CALLIE RUTH

Ruth Jane Lawrence, born October 7, 1895 in Wray, married Leon Hall April 19, 1916 in Wray.  they were in Missouri in 1920, 1930 and 1940, and one tree said she died February 26, 1991 in Rochester, Minnesota.

1916 "Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hall of near Alliance, Nebraska, are visiting relatives and friends in Wray this week.  Mrs. Hall's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence and Mrs. Hall having two sisters, Mrs. Hopkins and Mrs. Blaine Churchill, residing here."

1917 "Mrs. Leon Hall arrived in Wray Sunday and is visiting her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence, and other relatives.  Mrs. Hall is from Antioh (should be Antioch) Nebraska.

 

1916

1918 "Mrs. W.L. Hopkins left Monday evening for Missouri, where she goes to visit her brother, Leon Hall, and wife.  A bright baby boy, Jack Lawrence Hall, has arrived at the Leon Hall home, and it is to visit the new nephew, as well as the rest of the family that takes Mrs. Hopkins there this time.

Callie married Stephen Hill and then Major Sweet. 

 In 1916    Callie Lawrence did a reading at the Eckley Old Settlers' Picnic Wednesday, August 31st.

1922 "Sammie Louise Hill arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hill at Trenton, Mo. Thursday March 23, according to announcements received in Wray this week. Mrs. Hill was formerly Miss Callie Lawrence of this place."

1914 "Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lawrence and little son returned to their home in Akron Friday after a visit with Mrs. Lawrence's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence.  They were accompanied by little Miss Margaret Lawrence who will  remain with them until the opening of the school in Wray next Monday."

In 1917 Margaret Lawrence was leading  a Sunday School class at the Wray Methodist Church. 

Also in 1917, she was a sophomore at the Wray schools.

Also in 1917, she was one of five new clerks hired by the Wray Mercantile Company..

1919 "Miss Miriam Gatley has accepted a position as clerk in the Lambert store during the absence of Miss Margaret Lawrence."

1922 "Miss Margaret Lawrence, formerly of Wray, who now resides in Trenton, Mo., is visiting friends in Wray."

Margaret married Richard Hill - she was living in Trenton Missouri. 

 

October 1910 "Mrs. Sarah Hill and Mrs. Becky Lawrence have been enjoying a visit with Dan Hill, brother of Mrs. Lawrence."

Frank is a dentist in Missouri. 

Walter was a veterinarian. 

Charles Counter Lawrence registered for WWI in McCook Nebraska, where he is a locomotive fireman. He said he was born in Belleville Kansas February 15, 1888. He has a wife and child

In 1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lawrence and little son, of McCook, Nebraska, spent Sunday with the former's parents, Mrs. and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence, Mrs. and Mrs. Fred Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bocock also spent Sunday in the Lawrence home.


May 1917 "Mrs. Leon Hall left Monday morning for her home in Nebraska, after a two weeks visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Lawrence of West Wray. Mrs. Hall was accompanied to her home by her little niece, Alice Hopkins, and by her friend, Miss Blanche Keller who will visit in the Hall home for one or two weeks."

In 1920 Willow Grove (same county) Charles is married to Rebecca, 27 and they have Leroy W. 8.

James Woodson Lawrence registered for WWI in Wray, where he was working for the T.B. Groves lumber company.  He said he was born March 22, 1892 in Wray.

In 1930 he's in Palisade, Mesa County (where all the peaches grow).  He's married to Louise I. 31, and they have Virginia W. 6.  They're still there in 1940, although it's Helen V. age 16


September 6, 1946 "Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weaver left Monday for a week's visit with relatives at Vernon, Colorado. Dr. and Mrs. Elmer F. Giets of Matoon, I11inois, are visiting Mrs. Getz’s parents. Mr. and Mrs James Lawrence."

Andrew W. Lawrence proved up 160 acres in 1N 44W - about halfway between Eckley and Wray.

Mary died in 1918, and is in the Wray cemetery. 

A.W. Lawrence married Myrtle Jennings November 10, 1919

In 1920 Wray Andrew 64 is married to Myrtle M. 42.  They have James 28 and five Jennings stepchildren.

Myrtle Jennings married Baptest Allies July 10, 1926.

Charles Counter Lawrence, born Feb 16, 1888 in Belleville, Kansas, died March 20, 1921 and is buried in the Wray cemetery.

1899  "F.T. Counter of Twin Bridge, Mont, brother of J.N. Counter and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence, spent a few days in Wray this week.  He has been a resident of Montana for the past eighteen years, not having met any of his family for that length of time."

1910 "Mrs. J.C. Humphrey of Belleville, Kansas is in the city visiting her sister Mrs. A.W. Lawrence."
 

Chauncey Perry was born in Lenawee county, Michigan, April 21st, 1843. He was raised on the farm, working thereon during the summer and going to school in winter. He enlisted December 5th, 1861, in Co. E, 3d Michigan Cavalry and served until February 12th, 1866. Soon after his discharge he moved to Iowa and took a course in the Great Western Business College at Mt. Pleasant, from which he graduated September 10th, 1866, and for nearly three years held an important clerkship in the state asylum for the insane. He came to Kansas in 1870, taking the NE 1/4 of section 1, in Jefferson township as a homestead and while making it his home, taught school for about eighteen months. He was appointed deputy clerk of the district court, and was elected to that office in 1872; was elected county clerk in November, 1873, which office he filled in a creditable and satisfactory manner for ten years. He was married November 18th, 1872, to Miss Adela E. Counter. Soon after leaving the county clerk's office he engaged in banking, and continued in the business about seven years; was elected councilman of the city of Belleville in 1878, and again in 1882, and mayor in 1880 and 1881. Mr. Perry always took a lively interest in everything that pertained to the welfare and advancement of the community, and his advice and counsel were often sought. He died at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. J. N. Counter, in Wray, Colorado, August 17th, 1894.

Dorothy Lawrence, born Feb 9, 1890 in Wray, died Feb 13, 1948 in Palisade.

 

 

March 28, 1919 Palisade Colorado

April 1919 " J. E. Morford received word Wednesday that Daniel Bocock of Wray, Colo., who recently purchased the "86" ranch west of town, was loading his household goods and other effects and would start for Palisade as soon as possible. His family are expected here in a day or two."

August 1920 Palisade "Mr. Bocock arrived the first of the week from Holdredge, Neb., for a visit with his brother, D. Bocock and family. He was met here by his wife and daughter who are returning from Pomona, Cal., where they have been visiting. After a visit with the relatlves here all will return lo Nebraska."

October 1920 "Mrs. Byers returned to her home in Eagle, Colo., Tuesday afternoon after a visit with her girlhood friends Mrs. D. B. Bocock and Mrs. John F. Weaver."

January 7, 1921 Palisade "James, the nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Bocock, died New Year's day and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Federated church, followed by Interment In the I. O. O. F. cemetery. The lad was taken sick some time ago and physicians pronounced it diabetis. He was out of school some weeks ago but had returned until a few days before his death. The family came here two years ago from Wray, Colorado. Rev. J. R. Blunt preached the funeral service taking bis text from the Psalm 23. Mesdames Johnson and Woolf and Messrs. Johnson and Selindh sang 'Lead Kindly Light' and 'Face to Face.' Many beautiful floral offerings rested on the little casket, among which were handsome pieces from the order of Oddfellows and the Farmers' union. The family has the sympathy of many friends."

DOROTHY

Dorothy married Fred Weaver of Vernon.  March 4, 1910 marriage license "to John F. Weaver and Dorothy M. Lawrence.


August 8, 1924

September 1924 "Mrs. Steven Hill and Miss Margaret Lawrence of Trenton, Mo., are visiting at the homes of Fred Weaver and Dan Bocock."

Lyman Frederick Weaver 1844-1924 is buried in Vernon # 47672107.

January 8, 1943 " Fred Weaver returned Dec. 27 from Wray, Colorado where he had been visiting relatives. On Jan. 1 he and Mrs. Weaver moved to an apartment at 528 White, Grand Junction. Mr. Weaver has employment at the County shops and Mrs. Weaver has part time work at a restaurant."

January 1943 "Mrs. Paul Brooks, Mrs. William Weaver, Harold and Oliver Royal of Grand Junction were called to* Sterling, Colo., Wednesday night by the serious illness of their mother. Sandra and Gary Brooks will stay with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brooks and Mrs. Fred Weaver will stay in the William Weaver home in Grand Junction."

May 1943 " Mrs. Fred Weaver has received announcement of the marriage of her sister, Mrs. Callie Stevens to Lt. Colonel A. W. Sweet of Camp Mexia, Texas. Mrs. Stevens Sweet has been the supervisor of the service club at Camp Bowie at Brownwood, Texas the past 28 months."

June 1943 " Mrs. Mary Ammerman and son, Sedly of Gypsum were Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weaver. They are staying at the Dan Bocock home a few days. They returned to Gypsum Wednesday."

June 1944 "Mr. and Mrs. William Weaver and girls, Ruth and Nancy were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weaver.

Mrs. Fred Weaver left Monday night for Missouri to visit her brother, Frank Laurence.
Mr. and Mrs. William Weaver and girls, Ruth and Nancy left Mondav night to visit Mrs. Weaver's folks. Mr. and Mrs. Royal at Sterling, Colorado."

August 1946 "Mr. and Mrs. Arch Wakefield and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kohlman left Tuesday morning by car to return to their home in Vernon, Colo. They were assisting with the peach harvest at Fred Weavers. Mrs. Wakefield is a sister of Fred Weaver."
September 6, 1946 "Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weaver left Monday for a week's visit with relatives at Vernon, Colorado."

Dorothy M. Weaver 1890-1947 is buried in Palisade # 50702880.

October 19, 1948 "Congratulations and best wishes of many, friends are being extended to the newlyweds. Mr. and Mrs Fred Weaver who were married last week in Clifton. Mrs. Weaver is the former Mrs. Anna Royle of Palisade. Mr. and Mrs. Weaver will reside in Palisade."

March 1950 " Mrs. Blanche Loos of Fleming has been visiting the past week with her mother, Mrs. Fred Weaver and her sisters Fay Brooks and Bernice Weaver. She left Tuesday for home."

1954 "Mrs. Fred Weaver who suffered a fall recently is able to be up now."

John F. Weaver 1876-1960 is buried in Palisade # 50702890.

May 20, 1904

1911 "Anna Lawrence will leave next Saturday for Belleville, Kans, where she will attend high school."



April 4, 1912 "Mrs. Dan Bocock and two children returned to their home, fifteen miles north of town, after spending one week visiting with parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Lawrence, in this town."

July 17, 1913


Daniel E. Bocock proved up 320 acres in section 20, 3N 44W in 1916, next to Anna Lawrence's, and next to Alfred Bocock's 1909 claim of 160 acres.

March 8, 1917

1916 "the Dan Bocock family of north of Wray, and Mrs. and Mrs. Fred Weaver and little son of near Vernon, together with Miss Lorena Stewart, who is teaching the Wells school this year, are being entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Lawrence today."

1917 "A. Bocock and son, Dan, and Mrs. and Mrs. Fred Weaver left last Monday for Antioch Nebraska, where they went to attend a sale of land which was held at that place.  They are thinking of locating there."

The 1913 funeral of Mary Bocock, mother of "Daniel Bocock of Wray" was held at the A.W. Lawrence house in West Wray.

November 3, 1922 "Mrs. D. E. Bocock and Mrs. Weaver let Sunday for Wray, Colo., to attend the funeral of their father, who passed away there the last of the week."

July 1923 "Mrs. Anna Humphrey and Jack Humphrey who have been visiting the Daniel Bocock home, left Tuesday evening for their home in California. Mrs. Humphrey is Mrs. Bocock's aunt."

October 1923 "Miss Margaret Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Hill and Richard Hill from Trenton, Mo., are here visiting in the homes of sisters of Miss Lawrence and Mrs. Hill, Mrs. D. E. Bocock and Mrs. J. F. Weaver.

Anna A. Bocock 1886-1935 is buried in Palisade # 47070632>


October 1943 "Mr.and Mrs. Dan Bocock have written back that they will remain in California at least until next summer so Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brooks and children will stay on at the Bocock home during their absence."

October 1944 "Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bocock have an 8 1/2 pound son, Robert, born Thursday morning, Oct. 12."

September 1945 "Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bocock and son left Friday morning for California to visit Mr. Bocock’s sister, Mrs. Lillian Gantz."
July 28, 1950 "Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bocock and son Bobby of Pomona. Calif., who were on their way to Rifle to visit their daughter, Mrs. Ted Ammerman and family, stopped for a brief visit with friends in Palisade Tuesday afternoon."
Daniel E. Bocock 1888-1973 is buried in Palisade # 47070669.
Pomona, California, "Daniel Elbert Bocock of 1037 Douglas Drive died Friday, March 16, 1973 in Pomona Valley Community Hospital. Mr. Bocock was born Nov. 26, 1888, in Franklin County, Neb., lived at Wray, Colo., where he was a rancher, and in Palisade, Colo., where he was engaged in peach ranching and was county road supurvisor. In 1946, he moved to California. he had lived in Pomona for the past 27 years doing gardening work. Besides his widow, Lucille, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ammerman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Miss Jo Anne Bocock at home; a sen, Robert Allen of Montclair: two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Todd Memorial Chapel Pomona. The Rev. Vernon T. Trahms, pastor of the Peace Lutheran Church, will officiate. Services will conclude in the chapel and interment will be in the Palisade Cemetery."

Mary Margaret Ammerman, June 9, 1909 - July 2, 1983, wife of Luie T. Ammerman, is buried in Rifle Colorado # 134334776.
Luie 1896-1979 is buried in Rifle, # 134334718.


Anna Adelma Lawrence, per one tree, was born May 13, 1886 in Belleville, Kansas, and died Dec 20, 1935 in Palisade, Colorado.

 


WALTER

August 1943 " Mrs. Fred Weaver and J. W. Lawrence have received letters telling that their brother. Walter has been promoted from captain to major. He has charge of food inspection and ia stationed in North Africa. Waiter says he wants ( the boys In excellent health as he does not think they can do a very good Job of flattening Rome if they have indigestion."

April 1945 Palisade "Major Walter Lawrence, chief veterinarian, stationed at Cairo, Egypt, was on a furlough in Italy recently and while there was privileged to shake hands and visit with the Pope. Major Lawrence Ls a brother of Mrs. Fred Weaver and James Lawrence."

EDITH

June 1945 Palisade "Miss Edith Laurence, who visited her sister. Mrs. J. W. Lawrence and family for several days, left Friday morning for Wenatshee, Washington to resume her duties."
