Martha Elizabeth Shell Hitchcock BIRTH 1850 DEATH 1926 (aged 75–76) BURIAL Grandview Cemetery Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, MEMORIAL ID 63879703
Martha E. Shell was born in Platte county, Missouri, August 31, 1850, and died November 7, 1925, at her home in Newberg, Oregon, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 6 days.
At the age of 6 years she moved with her parents to Nodaway county. Missouri, and on October 22, 1868, she was married to Henry Hitchcock, who preceded her in death October 14, 1908.
To this union were born fifteen children, two having died in infancy. Those living arc John, Henry, Fred and James Hitchcock, and Mrs. D. A. Hendrie of Wray, Colo.; Mrs, Eva L. Bunn, Lottie E. Carson, Sidney and Shell Hitchcock of Newberg, Ore.: Mrs. Katie Carson of Burbank, Cal.: Frank E. Hitchcock of Lookout; Cal.: Charles Hitchcock of Harrisburg; Va., and Mrs. Cecil Choate of Calhan, Colo.
In 1888 Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock moved to Wray, Colo., and settled on a homestead near here. Mrs. Hitchcock, after her husband’s death, resided in Wray until 1921, when she moved to Newberg, Ore., where she made her home until death.
Thus closes the chapter of two as fine a couple as ever came out to the frontier to give of their lives the best that was in them for its advancement. The Hitchcock home on Chief creek six miles northwest of Wray has for years been a by-word as a social center; a home where love and affection abounded; a home that was broad in its conception of the finer things ot life. And even to this day, seventeen years after the head of the home was taken, and since 1921, when she who is now cold in death reigned there as devoted mother, friend and neighbor, is the Hitchcock ranch spoken of in reverence and admiration. But time demands its pay; death its reward. All is now changed. New and other things have crowded in where formerly pioneer life and hospitality held forth. A new life radiates from the old hearthstone and new blood and ambition hold where the old left off. But may the memory of the old ever lift a fragrant and touching inspiration to the new.
The remains of the deceased will arrive today, and funeral services will be held here. The remains of this good woman will be tenderly laid to rest beside those of her departed husband in Grandview."
