Pauline Hayward and uncle James Currie, Wray

In 1860 St. Albans, Vermont, James "Currier" is 38, Samantha 37, Amelia 14, Sarah 13, James 10, Leslie 9, Willie 7, Harriet 5, and Semantha 1.

In 1870 St. Albans, James Currie is 50, Semantha 49, Willie 16, Jennie 11, Leslie 19, Sarah 23, and Hattie 14.

FindAGrave has James Luke Currie dying May 20, 1879, buried in St. Albans 14927533.  Also buried there are wife Semantha Harriet Robinson 1821-1885 and daughter Jennie Torrey.

In 1880 St. Albans, James Currie is 30, Harriet 59, Sarah 33, Harriet 25, and Jennie 21.  So James was the head of the household for a while.

In 1880 St. Albans, Vermont, John Hayward is 38, Amelia 35, Anna Belle 10, Noyce 7, and Pauline 3, all born in Vermont.  This must be the "uncle Jim" mentioned in Mrs. Marcoux's letter about Noyce.

Anna Belle Hayward died Sept 2, 1884 in Boston, born in St. Albans, parents John W. and Amelia (Currie) Hayward.

Pauline is a teacher in 1896 Pottawatomie County, Kansas, living with the J.C. and Ida Smith family.

In 1900 James E. Currie is boarding in Wray with the Alfred and Mary Davenport hotel.  He's single, born March 1850 in Canada.

Noyce was employed by Samuel Taylor, father of Sarah Taylor, who he married on February 1, 1899. For a time Noyce was rural mail carrier, using a horse and buggy, but found it difficult in the snowy, rainy weather. He later ran a grocery store for many years on the east side of main street. When he was forced to close the doors of the store, he ran a creamery and was employed by the Swartz and Lynn Grocery and Dry Goods store.

Noyce served as Sunday School superintendent and song leader. Sarah helped in the Ladies aid. Both were interested in lodge work. Sarah, or "Libbie" as she was affectionately called, was secretary of the Royal Neighbors Lodge for many years. Noyce was a Modern Woodman and led a crack drill team. They were judged first many times.

As parents of nine children -- Harold, Ernest, Wallace, Nelson, Iva, Zella, Myra, Edith and Bertha, they were interested in and involved with school activities for many years. Noyce enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and would attend the games at the ballpark. On Sunday afternoons after the game, it was customary to go to the Kester Drug Store for ice cream to take to Grandmother Taylor's as a treat for all.

Noyce H. Hayward Is Taken By Death Noyce Hayden Hayward, 83, former Onaga grocer passed away in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Monday after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Hayward was born at Saint Albans, Vermont. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. For many years before retiring to a farm at Tonganoxie he operated a grocery business in Onaga. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Tonganoxie. At the time of his death he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bertha McHenry, of McClouth, Kansas. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Myra Marcoux of Havensville, Mrs. Bertha McHenry of McClouth, Mrs. Iva Fannen of Kansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Edith Bradford of Palo Alto, California and Mrs. Zella Rough of Parkville, Missouri; three sons, Harold H. of Birmingham, Michigan, Ernest of Bonner springs and Nelson of Shawnee, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, January 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the McClouth Methodist Church. Burial was at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens near Kansas City. ------------------------------------------------ Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hayward. 74, of 1135 Troup. Kansas; City. Kansas, died yesterday at the home. Mrs. Havward was a member of the London Heights Methodist church and the Royal Neighbors of America. Surviving are her husband. Noyce Hayden Hayward of the home; five daughters. Mrs. Iva Pannan, 2101 North Eleventh. Kansas City Kansas; Mrs.. Zella Rough. Hari..ville. Mo.; Mrs. Mvra Marcoux, Havensville, Kas.; Mrs. Edith Bradford. Palo Alto, Calif., and Mrs. Bertha McHenry. McCLouth, Kas.; three sons. Harold H. Hayward. Detroit; Ernest T. Hayward, Basehor. Kas., and Nelson N. Hayward. Shawnee, Ok., and a brother, Albert E. Taylor, Toledo. O. ----------------------------------------------------------- Myra Hayward Marcoux, 78, rural Centralia, died Saturday, April 3, 1993, at a Topeka hospital. Mrs. Marcoux and her husband farmed in Jackson,  Ottawa, ON, Canada, Pottawatomie and Nemaha counties. She was born September 27, 1914, in Onaga, the daughter of Noyce and Sarah Elizabeth Taylor Hayward. She grew up in Onaga and was graduated from Onaga High School in 1931. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs in Centralia, and the Reading Circle. She served on the Onaga Hospital Auxiliary. She attended Buck's Grove Methodist Church southeast of Havensville, and the First Congregational Church in Centralia. She was also active in the music departments and women's fellowship of both churches. She was married to Roy Marcoux on February 23, 1935. He died April 2, 1983. Two sons preceded her in death. Roy Marcoux Jr. died in childhood and Craig A. Marcoux died in January 1987. Survivors include a daughter, Loretta Dunnaway, Dallas, Texas; a son, Marc Marcoux, Centralia; a sister, Zella Rough, McLouth; and five grandchildren.

Pauline Hayward is in Pottawatomie County, Kansas in 1900, boarding with the Kaufahl family.

1902 Wray

Wray - January 13, 1905 "Wm. Currie of Lincoln, Nebraska attended the funeral of his brother James, last Sunday."

William F. Currie is in 1900 Lincoln, an auditor for the B&M - born Oct 12, 1856 in Vermont, with Etta Bell Dec 12, 1863 Illinois. - four kids born in Nebraska. - Julian, Jannet, William, and Hariet.

Eta B. Currie is widowed in 1910 Los Angeles, with James 24, William 16, Harriet 12 - these three born in Nebraska.

In 1870 James is 50, Semantha 49, Willie 16, Jennie 11, Leslie 19, Sarah 23, and Hattie 14. James was born in Canada, everyone else in Vermonth.
In 1880 St. Albans, Vermont, James is 30, mother Harriet 59, sisters Sarah 33, Harriet 25, and Jennie 21, the four kids born in Canada.

Hattie Currie was born Aug 15, 1881 in Vermont to James Currie and Almyra Olell.

James cash-claimed a quarter in 28, 1N 43W in 1890, proved up 160 acres in sections 27 and 28, 1S 43W in 1892, and timber-claimed 160 acres in 1900.
"Heirs of Mattie L. Currie" proved up a quarter in 21, in 1893. But the newspaper of February 1904 says "James E. Currie, for heirs of HATTIE L. Currie, deceased."
The Wray cemetery records have three Currie burials, all in section 1 5 19. Those most likely are James, Sarah, and Hattie Currie.

1899 Wray "W. A. Lippencott has moved to the Renzel place eight miles west. Jas. Currie will convert the vacated house into a batchellor's (sic) hall.

In 1900 James E. Currie is boarding in Wray with the Alfred and Mary Davenport hotel.  He's single, born March 1850 in Canada.

The 1887 history said Hattie L. Currie of St. Albans taught sixteen terms in the St. Albans Graded School, and current address was Seward, Nebraska.

In 1866 the St. Albans newspaper school report said "District No. 17.  Taught by Miss Sarah Currie.  Visited June 15.  Found 20 scholars registered and 15 present.  This was a very small, but an exceedingly well ordered and satisfactory school.  The pupils seemed to be interested in study, were in good subjection, and were taught those things which they most need to know and in a thorough manner."

 Sarah A. Currie was a teacher at the Vermont Normal School in the fall term of 1870

James' sister Jennie S. Currie married Bench M. Torrey, born in Georgia, Vermont to Hubbell Torrey and Marian Shepherd -  May 25, 1881, and died Aug 2, 1884.  She's buried with parents in St . Albans Bay.

Milton B. Torrey, born about 1851, to M. H. Torrey and Mary A. Shepard,  died Sep 1, 1887 in Georgia, Vermont - age 36.  Milton B. Torrey was born March 11, 1888 in Swanton, Vermont to Milton B. Torrey and Lattie Hume.

  Marion Louise Torrey was born January 25, 1882 in Georgia, Vermont to Beach M. Torrey and Jennie Currie.

Marion L. Torrey married William E. Flynn July 26, 1906 in Vermont.

Because the obituary said MISS Terry, it might have been wrong with the MRS. McLaughn - there was a Sarah McLaughlin , born June 1873 in St. Albans in 1900, born in Canada.

 In 1912 Austine H. McLaughlin was administratrix of the estate of James E. Currie, and was suing J.S. Hendrie.

FindAGrave 37005397 has Wm. H. Currie buried in Omaha - no dates.
The Wray newspaper of 1905 said "Wm. Currie of Lincoln, Nebraska attended the funera of his brother James, last Sunday."
Etta is widowed in 1910 Los Angeles, 47, with James 24, Wiliam 16, and Harriet 12.
March 1911 Omaha "William and Mattie Currie, 2013 Pierce Street, boy."

In 1918 Los Angeles, Etta (wid W.F.) lives at 1036 Beacon. Julian D. is a cashier at Youngs Market, also at athat address. William L. no occupation is there, too.
In 1920 Los Angeles, Etta B. is 45, Julian D. 36, William 26, Harriet F. 22.
Etta is still in Los Angeles in 1939, living at 4025 Brighton Avenue.
In 1940 Los Angeles, Etta is 77, William - a piano tuner - is 45.

James Lucian Currie, son of Wm. F. Currie and Etta B. Plowman, married Helen Guenther in Los Angeles Feb 6, 1912.
James Lucian Currie, born Oct 13, 1885 in Nebraska, died Sept 28, 1949 in Orange County, California.
Harriet Frances Butler - father Currie- born July 20, 1897 in Nebraska, died Aug 18, 1995 in San Bernardino County.
She and O. Moores Butler are buried in Redlands, California # 32995102.
