Steve and Gertrude(DeFigh) Gray
In 1880 Audrain County, Samuel Defigh is 40,
Mary 39, John 10, Pearley 6, GERTIE 4, and Minnie seven months.
Stephen A. Gray and Gertrude DeFigh, both of Audrain County,
married there on December 28, 1898.
In 1900 Audrain County, Stephen is farming, born Sept 1877 in Illinois, married two years to Gertrude may 1876 in Ohio.
October 2, 1908 "S. A. Gray and father received word Monday of the
death of a brother of the former who had been employed at railroading at
Kansas City. They were 35 miles in the country at the time,
but word was sent them so that they left on that evening's
train for the scene of the accident."
August 1909 "Mrs. Sam Gray and Mrs. Lois Naylor of Centralia, Mo.
are guests at the home of S. A. Gray and family this week."
In 1910 Yuma County, Stephen is a cattle buyer, 33, with Gertrude H. 34 and sister Edna S. 24.
June 17, 1910 "On Friday, June 10th, Henry Wells received a message
stating that his son, Renz Wells, had been killed by the cave-in of a
sand bank at McCook, Nebraska. He immediately told the mother,
sister and brothers of the accident and accompanied by Steve Gray left
for McCook to bring the remains back to Wray. He learned on arriving
at McCook that Renz had gone to work earlier than the other men
employed at the sand bank. The bank, which had not not been considered
safe for some time, had caved in upon him, but he had been dug out at
once. It was believed that he was killed instantly as tons of
earth had caught him, crushing the body and fracturing a leg in two
places. The sand bank was about two miles from town.
The remains were brought to Wray Saturday morning and taken
to the home of Steve Gray. ("Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gray are rejoicing
over tiie arrival of a son and heir at their home, born Saturday,
Nov. 12, 1910."
"Local politicians should not lose sight of the young Republican
recently arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gray in the future
as we have the mother's word for it, that it is to be 'true blue.'"
August 1912 "The Misses Edna and Bertha Gray came yesterday
from their home in Centralia, Missouri, for a visit with their
brother, Steve Gray, and family. They expect to
leave in a few days for Denver and Greeley where they go for
a vacation before Miss Edna begins her school work as one of the
instructors in our public schools and before Miss Bertha
takes up her work as a student in the Greeley Normal."
September 1912 "Mrs. Steve Gray leaves for Greeley today to
visit her sister-in-law, Miss Bertha Gray, who is attending the
normal school there. Mrs. Gray will return Saturday or Sunday."
August 1913 "Messrs. Frank Akey and Steve Gray camped with
the S. J. Lewis family Sunday night.
They were looking for cattle to buy."
August 1913 "Mrs. R. E. Streeter and children of Centralia, Missouri,
are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gray. Mrs. Streeter and Mr. Gray are brother and sister."
(Mary E. Streeter, born Feb 26, 1882 in Illinois,
died in San Mateo County, California December 5, 1969.
"Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday from
the Chapel of the Highlands, Millbrae, for Mary E. Streeter, 87,
527 Santa Florita, Millbrae, who died Friday at a Daly City
rest home. She was a native of Illinois. She is survived by a son,
Harold of Millbrae, a daughter, Helen Putnam of Texas;
a sister, Bertha Griffin of North Hollywood;
three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at Skylawn Cemetery, San Mateo. "

April 1914 "P. J. Bowne, an uncle of Mrs. S. A. Gray, who has been
visiting in the Gray home, returned to his home in Sturgeon, Missouri,
last Monday."
February 1915 "Mrs. Fred Parshall will entertain Mrs. Steve Gray at a
farewell dinner this evening. Mrs. Gray leaves tomorrow for Imperial, Nebraska,
to join her husband who has been there for some time."
August 1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Walter Harrew of Chicago, are
visiting their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gray, west of town, they
stopping here on their way home from a trip to west. Last Sunday a big
dinner was given by Mr. and Mrs. Gray in honor of their guests, among
whom were Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Fair of town."
June 1916 " Mrs. Steve Gray was called to Centralia, Missouri,
by the serious illness of their little son, Gerald, who has been visiting
there. Mr. Gray went east to bring his son back
home but found him sick and wired for his mother."
February 1918 " Steve Gray, west of town, and Miss Bertha Gray,
teacher in the Yuma schools, were called to Centralia, Missouri,
last Friday, by the illness of their mother. The mother passed
away Saturday."
In 1920 Wray, Stephen is a rancher, 42, Girtie 43 - born in Missouri in this census - Gerald 8, and Stepehn's father sam 68 born in Illinois, widowed.
1927 "Steve Gray and Hans Christensen
were business visitors down at Benkleman last Friday.
They report that the hail of the week before did untold damage
in the vicinity of Benkleman and Parks."
December 1928 "Mrs. Steve Gray was named by the town board at
their meeting Tuesday evening of this week to complete the term
as town clerk. The position was made vacant by the death
of Miss Mattie DeFigh. Mrs. Gray is a sister of Miss DeFigh
and has become acquainted with the duties
of the office through helping her sister and by working at the
office while Miss DeFigh was ill. Mrs. W. L. Hopkins has
been taking care of the office during the past few weeks. There were four applicants j for the office."
In 1930 wray, Stephen is a broker, 53, with Gertrude a clerk 54, and Gerald F. 19.
August 1930 "Miss Edna Gray, a former teacher in the schools at
Wray and well known to many residents of this community
is visiting in Wray at the Steve Gray home. Miss Gray is a sister
of Steve Gray. She came to Wray last Friday and will visit
here until Saturday. Miss Gray is now teaching in the Golden, Colo.,
schools."
1933 Moberly, Missouri " Mr. and Mrs. Steve Gray and son,
Gerald Gray, of Ray, Colo., were the honored guests at a basket
dinner held in a wooded pasture on the Clifford Winscott
farm north of Centralia Sunday. Those who attended from here
were Mr. and Mrs. P. B. DeFigh and Miss Loris DeFigh,
Mrs. R. L. Roberts, Mrs. J. C. Cunningham,
Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Appleman, Ruth and Bobby Appleman,
Mrs. Carrie Butts and sons, Ray and Lee Butts,
and Hazel Louise Stockton. Mrs. Gray is Mr. DeFigh's sister.
Mr. and Mrs. Gray and son came Monday for a brief visit with
the DeFighs. There were 98 at the dinner, most all being relatives ot the honorees. "
"Hans Christensen and Steve Gray were seen on the streets of Kirk one day last week."
March 11, 1937 "News reached here on Saturday that
Steve Gray, formerly well known man of Wray, had been killed
accidentally while crossing one of the streets of the city of Colton,
Calif. Mr. Gray left Wray two years ago and took up his residence
in California. He was 60 years of age at the time of his death.
A coroner's jury passed upon the accident as unavoidable.
He was crossing the street on foot when struck. Injuries which
caused his death were not obtainable, due to the remoteness of
the scene of the accident from here.
Remains will arrive in Wray Friday it was learned
and funeral services will be held from the Hitchcock Funeral Home
on this Saturday.
Steve Gray is survived by his widow,
Gertrude H. Gray of Wray, and one son, Gerald Gray of Denver.
He is also survived by three sisters and one brother."
Stephen Andrew Gray 1876-1937 is buried in Wray # 81621709.
1943 "In a recent real estate deal, the details of which were completed since her return to Denver, Mrs. Gertrude Gray sold her residence on South Main street to Loren Selby and his mother, Mrs. Willmay Selby. Hie property adjoins the residence now owned by Mrs. Selby."
1945 "Mrs. Willmay Selby went to Denver on Tuesday to visit her
friend, Mrs. Gertrude Gray."
1954 Wray "Mrs. Willamay Selby of Wray and her houseguest, Mrs. Gray of Denver, visited several days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Dale Woolery south of town."

EDNA
Edna is in Sterling, Colorado in 1920, teaching, living with the Hay family.
Black and white photograph of students in the seventh and eighth grades posed outside of South School in 1928. The teachers are identified as: R.T. Brown, Reva Teale, Edna Gray, and Mrs. Carroll.
She's living in Denver in 1930, rooming with Stuart and Jewel
Mendum.
She's in Golden, Colorado in 1940, 54, with Kathleen Henberry 23 born in Colorado, both teaching.
Edna, born August 2, 1884, died in Los Angeles County February 9, 1969.
BERTHA
Bertha is in Audrain County in 1900, born January 1893 in Missouri, Edna August 1885 in Missouri, with Smuel June 1881, and Sophia July 1852, both born in Illinois. Mary Feb 1882 in Illniois, Cyrus H. Dec 1886 and Roy E. January 1890 were born in Missouri.
April 1915 "Miss Mattie DeFigh and Miss Bertha Gray departed Saturday
morning for Imperial, Nebraska, Miss Gray having finished her term of
school in the Wells district on Friday. Miss DeFigh will remain in Imperial
with her sister, Mrs. S. A. Gray and family, and Miss Gray will visit
there a week before going on to her heme at Centralia, Missouri."
June 1916 "This office is informed that Miss Bertha Gray has accepted a position in the Yuma schools for the coming year."
October 1917 "Mrs. Samuel Gray, of Centralia, Missouri, was visiting with her daughter, Miss Bertha Gray, the
efficient teacher in the primarty department of the Yuma School the latter part of last week."
July 1919 "Miss Bertha Gray arrived Saturday in Wray to spend
the summer with her brother, Steve Gray and family.
Miss Gray taught in the Yuma schools during the last year and
contemplates teaching next year in New Mexico."
1924
In 1930 Honolulu, Bertha is 37, married to William B. Pittman 53.
William is buried in Honolulu 1876-1936 # 114430534.
Bertha is teaching in 1940
Honolulu, in a boarding house.
Bertha G., born January 11, 1893 to Samuel and Sophia Gray,
was named Griffin in 1959.
Bertha Griffin was in North Hollywood in 1969 when her sister Mary Streeter died.
