John and Almira (Spencer) Newbanks, Wages


ALMIRA'S FAMILY

Myron and Almira Spencer were married Sept 4, 1849 at Shaftsbury, Vermont.

In 1880 Will County, Illinois, Myron Spencer is 63, Wallie 28 single, Susan 28 widowed, Myron 5, Myra 3, and Parker 1.

In 1885 Smith County, M. Spencer is 69, W. M. 33, Almira 10, M. Spencer 9, and Parker Spencer 6.
Wales M. Spencer 1852-1920 is buried in Yuma County # 35478242.

Myron Spencer, 79, Wyoming rancher and stockman since his arrival in the state in 1906, died early Saturday morning after an illness of six years.
He was born in Wilks County, Ill. on April 9, 1876. In February, 1913 he was married in Heron, S.D. to Miranda Hughes.
After his arrival in Wyoming in 1906, Mr. Spencer was employed by the late Gov. B. B. Brooks before going into the ranching business in partnership with James R. Wilson.
Mr. and Mrs. Spencer and family have made their home for many years on the Big Muddy between Glenrock and Casper.
Mr. Spencer was a member of the Natrona County Pioneers Association and the St. Louis Catholic church of Glenrock.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Miranda Spencer; two sons, A. Wilks Spencer, Mills, and Roy R. Spencer, Malta, Mont.; a sister, Mrs. Myra Newbanks, Yuma, Colo., and eight grandchildren.
Rosary services were held on Monday evening at the Bustard Funeral Home. A requiem high mass was sung Tuesday morning at St. Anthony's Catholic church in Casper and burial followed in the family plot at Highland Cemetery, Casper, with the Rev. William Bader of Glenrock officiating. The two sons and nephews of Mr. Spencer acted as pallbearers.

JOHN'S FAMILY

John Newbanks and Mary "Beggemann", both of Madison County, Illinois, married in St. Louis Missouri on May 17, 1875.

The family wrote "Son of John Newbanks and Mary Begemann. Our records show that he was born 31 Aug 1874 in Edwardsville, Madison, Illinois. John Newbanks, was killed in a railroad accident in Joliet, IL."

"He was raised by a couple in Smith Center, Kansas. His Mother died in an accident and these people were her parents. His Dad worked for the railroad and was killed in Joliet, Illinois when he was still very young. He left the prairie and went to the mountains and started a coal business."

In 1895 Smith County, Fredericka is 64, Fred, 61. John Newbanks is 20, born in Illinois.

In 1900 Smith County, Kansas, John Newbanks is 23, Mary 24, Alice eleven months.

April 1909 Yuma Pioneer "John Newbanks of Bryant was a business visitor in our town Monday."

In 1910 Yuma County, John is 35, Mira 32, with M. Alice 10, Myron S. 8, Minnie E. 7, Fred U. 5, Nell 4, and Wales 2.

April 1917 "John Newbanks of Ford, Colo., was a Sterling visitor this morning on business at the U. S. land office. "

November 1917 " John Newbanks , one of the residents of the vicinity of Ford, was in Wray the first of the week attending to business affairs."

John registered for WWI in Yuma County, born August 31, 1874, farming, with a wife.

July 1919 "John Newbanks went to Yuma Monday returning Wednesday, having purchased a windmill at that place."
in 1920 Yuma County, John and Myra are both 45, born in Illinois. Alice 19, Spencer 18, Esther 16, Noble 15, Nell 14, and Wales 12 were born in Kansas, Parker 5 in Colorado. Next household is William M. Spencer, 68, widowed born in Illinois.

The 1935 Pueblo, Colorado directory has "Newbanks John (New Deal Coal Co) living at 717 Elmhurst."

John was buried January 4, 1937 in Pueblo # 111617905.

This Jessie Yeargain was, by Ancestry, in Sherman County, Kansas in 1900, Jessie R. Steward born November 1890 in Kanss, with robert 48 in Pennsylvania and Avis 36 born in Iowa. She's had three kids, three living. Jessie 9, Minerva M. 6, and Ellen N. 4.

Unless Jessie was adopted by the Stewards, the newspaper might be incorrect in saying she was John's sister.

June 13, 1957 This community was saddened Tuesday evening to hear of the death of Almira Newbanks, known to everyone as Grandma Newbanks, She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nell Larson at Arthur, Nebraska at the time of her death. She had been in failing health for several years due to rheumatism and arthritis. She passed away very suddenly of a heart attack.

Rev and Mrs. Goettel accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Parker Newbanks and family to Ogallala, Nebraska, Saturday. Andy and Gary stayed at the Dale Monk home while his parents were gone.

NOBLE

In 1940 Noble Newbanks is a farm laborer in Greeley, 35, with Louise 25, both born in Kansas, and Marlene 2.

Louise Newbanks, 88, of Greeley, CO died Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Centennial Health Care Center. A funeral service will be Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Macy Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Louise was born November 17, 1914 in Independence, Kansas to Frank P. and Clara (Vance) Adamson. She married Noble Newbanks on January 6, 1938 in Boulder, and he preceded her in March 1990. They had been married for 52 years. She moved to Greeley when she was a young child and attended the Campion Academy in Loveland, CO. She was a unit manager and handled sales for Stanley Home Products. She later became a field interviewer for Gallup Polls and Colorado Market Research. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Greeley. She enjoyed sewing, making clothes for her children, was active in the senior center exercise classes and enjoyed walking and traveling with her husband.
Her daughters, Marlene and husband Larry Leach of Moyia Spring, ID and Jan and her husband Walt Reagin of Willowstreet, PA; sister, Ruth Wonenberg of Greeley, CO; grandsons, Robert and Rick Etherton; granddaughter, Laura and her husband Mark Mathias; and nine great grandchild survive her.
Her parents, husband and son, Wales Norman Newbanks preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th Street, Greeley, CO 80631. 

ESTHER

Esther Newbanks married Arthur Hollringer on August 31, 1921 in Phillips County.

In 1930 Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Arthur is 32, born in Oklahoma, with Ester 27 Kansas. Myrtle is 5, born in Iowa.

MARY

July 28, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. John Martinson and two sons, and Mrs. Nellie Larson and family of Arthur, Nebraska, and Mrs. Emma Givens of Kanorado, Kansas were in Greeley Thursday to attend the funeral of Orlo Bliss. Mrs. Martinson was visiting her sister at Arthur when they received the word of their brother-in-law passing.

April 17, 1963 Mrs. Mary Alice Bliss, 63, widow of O. F. Bliss who worked for the City of Greeley for 30 years, a retired school teacher Adamson Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Bliss was born Feb. 12, 1900 at Smith Center, Kansas and moved with her parents to Yuma County where she was reared and graduated from Wray High School. She taught for three years in Yum: County and later attended Colorado State College from which she received a teaching certificate. She taught in Weld County for a number of years and two year in Wyoming. Later she did substitute teaching in the Greeley area until five years ago when she retired. She was married to O. F. Bliss at Sterling on May 31, 1927. He died July 19, 1960. Mrs. Bliss was a member of American Association of University Women. Surviving are: two children Mrs. Ida Nadeen Robb of Bakersfield. California, and Mrs. Sarah Jan Berg of Greeley: one stepson Roderick Allan Bliss of Ventura Calif.; three brothers, Spence Newbanks of Eckley, Noble Newbanks of Greeley and Parker (Mrs. Esther) Martinson of Haxtun. ...and Mrs. Nell Larsen of Arthur, Neb.: seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held

NELL

Nell Opal Newbanks, 20, married Eddie Lewis Larsen on June 2, 1926 in Sterling. They’re in Kearney County, Nebraska in 1930, with Gwendolyn A. 3 and DeLoris E. newborn.

In 1940 Yuma County, Eddie is 38, Nell 34, Gwendolyn 13, Deloris 10, Martin L. 7, Joan J. 5 –these four born in Nebraska. Mary M. 3 and Emma A. 1 were born in Colorado.

1944 Nov 2 " Miss Gwendolyn Larsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Larsen, the Wages storekeeper and postmaster, was united in marriage at St. Francis, Kansas last Wednesday to Junior Smith, also of the Wages community, but now in the army and home on furlough."

1965 "Mrs. Nell Larson, Arthur Nebraska – Mrs. Deloris Dancer, Alliance Nebraska – Spencer Larson Valentine Nebraska – Bruce Larson, Arthur Nebraska, – Mrs. Gwen Schmidt and Gene Convery of Denver were overnight guests of the John Martinson's Tuesday night. They were here to attend the funeral of Parker Newbanks."

December 23, 1982 "Mr. and Mrs. Dick Salvador and Mr. and Mrs. Perk Salvador went together to Arthur Nebraska on Monday for the funeral of Nell Larson, a former resident of the Wages community. She was owner, along with her husband, of the old Wages store. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Salvador also attended the funeral services. "
Gwendolyn Almira Schmidt had married Eugene Charles Convery and Otto Tillman Schmidt (Junior Smith).

Gwendolyn A. Convery, born Feb 28, 1927 at one time had an address of Arthur, another at Arvada, Colorado.

Bruce Eugene Larsen, 64, a lifetime Arthur County resident, died June 26, 2006, at his home. He was born Aug. 13, 1941, in Haxtun, Colo., to Eddie and Nell Newbanks Larsen.

He received his education in Arthur County grade schools and then graduated from Arthur County High School.

On Oct. 14, 1961, he married Joan Kay Kramer at the Arthur Baptist Church. The couple lived in Arthur County. He was a rancher his entire life and truly enjoyed his work and the country lifestyle.

Mr. Larsen was a member of the Arthur Baptist Church. He was a member of the Quarter Horse Association and the Nebraska Cattlemen. He also served on the Arthur County School Board and was active in the Pack Backers.

His family was special to him and he enjoyed going to the games to watch his grandsons play. He particularly liked going to the Arthur County Fair. His hobbies included helping neighbors, welding, and working in his shop.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Larsen of Hyannis; a daughter, Shelli (Doug) Bowman of Hy-annis; a son, Marty (Anna) Larsen of Whitman; two brothers, Martin (Lydia) Larsen, and Spencer (Marlene) Larsen, all of Arthur; five sisters, Gwendolyn Larsen of Haxtun, DeLoris Dancer, Joan Hines, Mary Mueller and Emma Robertson, all of Arthur; and five grandchildren, Jesse, Cody, and Corey Larsen, and A.J. and JoNelle Bowman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Brady Larsen.
A memorial has been established and is suggested to the Arthur County Ag Society.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Arthur Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben Keene officiat-ing. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Parker Newbanks drove to Arthur Nebrasks Sunday to visit with relatives and meet the new baby girl of Mr.and Mrs. Ronnie Sible, the latter being the former Emma Larson.

DeLoris Dancer, 76, of Arthur, Neb., died Sept. 2, 2006.
She was born Oct. 24, 1929, at Norman, Neb., in the family farm house, to Eddie Lewis Larsen and Nell Opal (Newbanks) Larsen, the second of eight children. In 1936 she moved from the farm at Norman, with her family to Wages, Colo., where she attended grade school. She went to high school in Wray, Colo., through her junior year.
In May 1946 the family moved to a ranch south of Arthur. She then graduated from Arthur County High School in 1947. During that summer she attended Kearney State College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught one term at Ford school in Yuma County, Colo., and then taught various country schools in Arthur County.
On Feb. 24, 1948, she married Willard Franklin Dancer at the Methodist Church in Wages, Colo. To this union three daughters and one son were born. The Dancers lived in the Sandhills on ranches in Cherry, Morrill and Grant counties, returning to the home ranch in Arthur County in 1985. Willard preceded her in death in February 1991. After his death she continued the ranching operation at the Dancer ranch northwest of Arthur.
In earlier years she was a member of the Cowbell Association and in later years she was an avid Pack Backer. She was also on the Arthur County ASCS board and election board for many years. In 1997 she left the ranch and moved into Arthur where she resided until her death.
Survivors include children, LaNell Dancer of Scottsbluff, ReNee (Russ) Peterson of Ogallala, Willard Dancer II of Arcadia, and Mary (Aldon) Sample of Arthur; four granddaughters, Desiree (Adam) Polly of Aurora, Colo., Sara (Jason) Meier of Alliance, Tiffany Dancer of Aurora, and Sabrina (Jessie) Hefner of Arthur; five grandsons, Zeb Peterson of Ogallala, Zeke Peterson of Ogallala, Zane Peterson of Blue Springs, Mo., Travis Dancer of Arthur, and Seth Sample of Arthur; four sisters, Gwendolyn Larsen of Haxtun, Colo., Joan Hines of Arthur, Mary Mueller of Arthur and Emma Robertson of Arthur; two brothers, Martin (Lydia) Larsen of Arthur, and Spencer (Marlene) Larsen of Arthur; two sisters-in-law: Joan Larsen of Arthur and Colleen (Myles) Stevens of Kearney and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and youngest brother, Bruce Larsen.
