Possibly Thomas Jesse Mitts, born September 4, 1845 in Keokuk County, Iowa to James Madison Mitts and Eveline B. ENGLAND Mitts, served in the 7th Illinois 1862 and the 1st Illinois Volunteers 1865, married Minerva Stratton in 1866 in Sangamon County, Illinois, lived there in 1870 and 1880.   In 1880 they have Edwin D. 12, Mary A. 10, Richard Y. 6, and Jessie H. 1.

In 1885 they're  in Cowley County, Kansas, and in Canadian County, Oklahoma in 1900.   One tree says Minerva died in Canadian County in 1907.

Jessie Mae never was in Yuma - she married Charles Liebert Crum in El Reno in 1896 and died in Montana May 26, 1910, buried in Forsyth city cemetery.

Thomas J. Mitts married Sarah A. Ries July 21, 1909.

The 1910 census of Yuma County has Thomas J. Mitts, 64, Iowa, married to Sarah A, 37, Illinois.  With them are stepsons Russell L. Miller, 9, Missouri, Burton A. Miller 8, Illinois, stepdaughter Eyola J. Miller 7, Illinois, and stepson Philip E. Riis 3, Illinois.

In 1911 Thomas proved up a quarter in 5N 45W - on the county line - and an adjoining quarter in 1913.

In 1920 El Reno, Oklahoma Thomas is a carpenter, Sarah not employed.  Enola Miller is 16, Phillip Ries is 13.

There's also a Thomas J. Mitts 74, Iowa, in a rooming house in Darlington - same county as El Reno ???

Then Thomas was in the veterans hospital in 1921, saying he was a millwright, living in El Reno, widowed, and nearest relative was Edwin D, Mitts of Afton, Oklahoma.  Thomas died in Leavenworth June 19, 1929, where he is buried.

The Afton cemetery also has an Ava Mitts (WIFE OF THOMAS J), born 1901 died 1927, daughter of Dr. W.C. and Louise Scott.

Richard Turley Mitts is buried in Woodward County, Oklahoma, and Edwin in Afton, Oklahoma.
