Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Samuel A. and Martha   Gill

In April 1917  S. A. Gill, of Holyoke, made application to lease all of section 36, 5N 44W.

In 1900 Atwood, Logan County Samuel - October 1868 and Martha  - July 1876 - Gill are farming.   Next household has Lucinda Gill, widowed  - December 1838 - living with daughter Hattie Jones and her husband Wilder Jones.

In 1910 Phillips County Samuel A. and Martha M. 33,  Gill have Clark C., 9, Glen G. 8 and Ina L. 6, all three kids born in Colorado.

In 1920 Valley precinct a Samuel A. Gill 51, Illinois, divorced, is living alone.  He didn't homestead in Yuma County, but a Martha Gill in 1920 owned two quarters about five miles south of Wages.  Those two quarters were proved up in 1922 by Martha M. Underwood.

In 1920 Martha M Gill, divorced, is a nurse in Sterling, with only Inez 16.     An Inez Gill married Otis Hamilton August 17, 1921 in Colorado.   (Otis was 10 in 1910, 19 in 1920 Phillips County, living with parents.  Otis and Inez in 1930 are in Galesburg, Illinois, where Otis works in a steel mill.  They have Velma I, 7, born in Colorado.  Otis is divorced in 1940 Dailey, Logan County

Inez is in Galesburg in 1940, 36,  a power equipment operator, divorced, and Velma is with her. father Samuel, and cousin Charles Linn, 37)

Martha May Gill married Carl Charles Underwood July 6, 1921 in Colorado.   (he must be the 24-year-old Carl Underwood in Brush in 1920, farm laborer, living with parents, and is "widowed" in 1940 Los Angeles, living with his brother Hilton Underwood)

In 1940 Inez Hamilton is in Galesburg, Illinois, and Samuel Gill is living with her.

Martha is buried in the Sterling cemetery, and Samuel died in Illinois.

(The Clifford Gill  1904-1962 buried in Norfolk is probably her younger brother.  Minnie's parents came from England in 1895, and she was with them in Cambria County, Pennsylvania in 1900.  Wonder if her being in Colorado is related to the James Franklin Gill 1873-1946 buried in Sterling....

Minnie Gill

The 1900 census of Gallitzin, Cambria County Pennsylvania has a Minie Gill, born April 1897 in Pennsylvania, with the George E. 29 and Florence 26 Gill family, who immigrated 1895 from England.  George is a coal miner, and they have Samuel 9, and William 6.

In 1910 they're all in Ward, Hocking County, Ohio, and have added Clifford 6, Ellen 4, Richard 2, and eight-month-old George.

Colorado marriage records have Ernest E. LaMar 24, marrying Minnie Gill 19 March 15, 1916 in Holyoke, performed by minister Jas. T. Bainbridge.

Mrs. Joslin wrote about Christmas dinner 1916 "Mr. and Mrs. Lamar and Melvin, Mr. Ernest Lamar and wife (Minnie Gill), and Mr. & Mrs. Mayo (Lucille Lamar) ate dinner with us Xmas"
