MILO E. BURGE and CORA STECKER BURGE

The 1910 census of Yuma County has Milo E. Burge 28, Nebraska, married to Cora E. Burge, 17, Iowa.  By the neighbors it's the same area where he homesteaded.

He probably was in Jewell County, Kansas in 1900 - oldest of ten kids of A? and Mary Burge.  One Ancestry tree has him born in Saunders County, Nebraska to Arthur Milo Burge and Mary Jane MASON Burge.

Cora Elva Stecker was born January 30, 1892 in Wayne County, Iowa to John F. and Zua Ellen FITE Stecker.  Zua (or Zue) was the daughter of A.J. and Caroline Fite (and the Ora Joslin diaries mention a "FYTE" with two daughters).  That must be Elias Henry Fite, claiming two quarters in 6N 45W - just a couple of miles north in Phillips County.  In 1910 Elias and Lillian had Murl 17, Marcia 15, Loyd 10, and Delmar 9.

Elias was Zua's brother, therefore Cora's uncle.

Zua E. is in Yuma County in 1910, Magee precinct, widowed, 42.  Son Clarence 15, daughter Ruda R. 14, Bertha 10, and son Henry 3, all born in Iowa, are with her.

John & Zua claimed a quarter two miles west of Milo in 1916.

In 1920 - still the same area - Zua only has Henry with her.

In 1920 and 1921 both Clarence and Zua claimed land about six miles south.

In 1930 she's married to John E. Marshall, still the same area, and Henry W. Stecker is with them.  John Marshall was farming in Phillips County in 1920, widowed, 66, born in Illinois, father New York, mother Canada,   Possibly he's the John Marshall in 1900 Fort Collins married to Martha.  and then John and Martha are in Hayes County, Nebraska in 1910.  If so , the Martha dying in 1916 buried in Fort Collins is likely.

In 1940 Haigler, Nebraska she's widowed again, Zua E. Marshall, 71, and Henry W. Stecker, 33 is still with her.

One index has Henry W. Stecker born October 5, 1907 living in Akron.  Henry is buried in Holyoke, dying October 1986.  John and Zua are also buried there.  Henry was a pallbearer and teh 1961 funeral of Louise F. Schmale Groothuis in Culbertson Nebraska - she was born in Yuma County in 1903.

Zua's daughter Inda Ruth Twiss is buried in the Wray cemetery November 27, 1895  -June 30, 1984 .  Robert Raymond  Twiss 1895 -1965 is on the same tombstone   Ida Stecker married Robert Twiss September 30, 1914.

Milo and Cora Elva Stecker married March 25, 1909 in Wray.  The Rattler reported "M.E. Burge and Miss Cora Stecker, who reside in the north end of the county, were united in marriage yesterday at the office of the county Judge, Judge Jennings performing the ceremony.  Best wishes are extended."

Milo claimed two quarters in 1916 a few miles northeast of Wages - right on the county line.

He registered for WWI in Phillips County, saying he was Milo Edwin Burge, born September 29, 1881.

Son Edwin A. Burge died in 1916, and is buried in the Holyoke cemetery.

In 1920 Yuma County Milo is 35 ?, Cora 30.  They have Ellen 8, Elva 6, Dorris 3, and Raymond 1.

In 1925 they're in Jewell County, Kansas.  Milo is 43, "Carie" 33, Ellen 14, Alva 12, Doris 8, Ramon 6, Hasel 4, and Loid 1.

Milo E. Burge is in the Superior, Nebraska cemetery - September 29, 1881 - April 17, 1928

The 1930 Jewell County census is off - Cora 38, widowed born in South Dakota, Raymond 18, Mary E. 16, Elva 15, Doris 13, Hazel 12, and Lloyd 7 all born in Kansas.

Cora E. Burge is in Jewell County, Kansas in 1940, a widowed seamstress. with son Lloyd, 16, born in Colorado.

Raymond is probably in the service in 1940 - in the Canal Zone- enlisting in 1946, and dying in Florida December 21, 1974, born August 11, 1918.

One tree says Elva Mae Burge was born December 28, 1912, married Charles Knox Lisenbee, and died November 8, 1986 in Seattle.  She might be in Denver in 1940, 24, born Kansas, a waitress.  She and Hazel Burg, 19, Kansas, also a waitress, are lodgers with the Noel family.

Cora Elva Burge married Lester Brown Sthay in Seattle December 3, 1946.  Witnesses were David H,. and Hazel M. Gibson.

Cora Sthay, born January 30, 1892, died October 1969 in Everett, Washington.

She's buried in the Superior Nebraska cemetery, section 7, lot 76  - Milo is in Section 1, lot 31.
